There's no build that makes LGRs viable. Even stacked up against basic IS Gauss, their damage to weight ratio is terrible and that's on top of the firing limit. And then you toss H-Gauss into the mix and they get blown completely out of the water.

L-Gauss is 12 tons for 8 damage (1.5 : 1)
H-Gauss is 18 tons for 25 damage (0.72 : 1)

More than double the damage per ton! Just no way for LGRs to complete.

this is not really accurate. in terms of pure dps LG is actually the highest of all the gauss rifles with its ridiculously short cd/charge. unfortunately taking advantage of this requires the ultimate face stare. the only real build I've found that works with LG is an annhi with 4LG and 6ML. you have to face stare everything (which means instant death if theres more than 180ton of mech arrayed against you) but your pure dps output is horrifying.

I was simplifying for emphasis. The point being, no matter their other advantages the wight to damage ratio on LGRs is simply too abysmal to be offset. As always, pinpoint frontload is king. Even aside from that, UACs and even RACs handily beat LGRs for sustained staredown DPS.

Problem with both of these is that you need the EDC set-of-8 bonus to get the -15% ballistic CD quirk. I wanted to put 2xuAC/10s on it to begin with but ended up with the single 20 just so I could get the 15% CD.

Mechwarrior 5 pre-order page is up: https://mw5mercs.com/#preorders
You get some MWO stuff if you pre-order the game and it also seems like we will get the Marauder II as this is one of the MWO bonuses for pre-ordering:

Honestly, those packages seem pretty generous. The MWO stuff on its own would be fairly okay, and you basically get MW5 for free on top of it. And I say that as someone that has refused to give them a dime since Closed Beta.

After my one and only encounter with PGI Customer Service I vowed never to give them any more money for MWO, but I know I'm going to get MW5 so I went ahead and pre-ordered, it's technically not giving money to MWO even though I get 24,000 mc and stuff right!?

I'm very tempted by MW5 but am going to wait till actual reviews come out & hopefully get it cheaper.

Pretty sure it's going to have four player co-op, and IIRC they've said it'll have modding support too.

I know it's already been said but, jesus, that really is a hefty amount of free poo poo for MWO they're giving away, even at the $50 tier. I don't like to preorder games, but if you're somebody who's likely to spend $50 on MWO between now and September this seems like a good way to get the most value for it.

Preposterous, loathsome, conceitful, vainglorious, and also horse poo poo.

Judging by what both developers and fans see in MW5, it's going to be bigger than Elder Scrolls Online combined with No Man's Sky. When MW5 drops it's going to create the Zone centered around Ratfuck, Canada. Russ will hide grimoires, scrolls and other magic items all around the Zone, so anyone venturing into it can learn actual black magic. The deep Zone will contain the ultimate rewards, the secrets of life and death, written in blood on either human or bear skin (the parchment originally belonged to the last local skin walker who kept the tradition going).

Founders will receive a wand or staff free of charge upon entering the Zone, provided by a PGI volunteer. They will also be able to conjure their favorite mechs to aid them on their journey, though these will only have the consistency of thin air, as well as being slightly transparent.

I got to say it:

on the optimistic side - since PGI has clearly been working with hairbraned schemes, due to selling their models to them, since they're all fanboys of the genre -

What are the odds they've had their eyes opened from exposure to HBStech and/or feedback/asking those people how to make a better game?

Honest question, not sarcasm.

On one hand, we haven't actually seen PGI dev a game start to fin in years. and they seem to be making a bit of 'oops we hosed up' admissions with bringing frozen city old back.

There's been tons of questionable business/management decisions that i won't go into, but they also seem the sort of folks to go 'oh, wow, thats amazing, how do we do that' after seeing someone else nail it.

I don't doubt that MW5 will be the best game PGI can make, but I also won't be surprised if it comes out and is mediocre. They're a smallish studio and they are making a MechWarrior game. They simply don't have the budget to push the franchise forward like a lot of people are expecting. I'm expecting a MechWarrior rear end MechWarrior game and not much else.

However, PGI would get a lot of brownie points with me if it came to console.

My personal hope is that it does well enough to merit a follow-up game which doesn't require the engine & asset dev time of building the game entirely from scratch, and thus has more time to be fully in depth. Something like how MW2: Mercs greatly expanded MW2, or how Shadowrun: Dragonfall filled out Shadowrun Returns.

PGI makes a Mechwarrior game and I want more Mechwarrior games so PGI will get my money as did HBS. I would prefer that a bigger/better studio made the game but it is what it is. You can't please everyone and despite all the "oopsies" and weird design choices MWO is really solid these days.

I don't think MW5 will be anything revolutionary but hopefully it will be something that makes the Mechwarrior franchise more popular, might even draw in some new players to MWO just as Battletech did.

The Marauder II looks pretty sweet too.

PGI's failing has always been in abysmal balance/design decisions, while the actual stompy robot shooting feel was excellent even all the way back in 2012.
In a game with mod support though, you can take an axe with vengeance to any hidebound dumbass chained to tabletop balancing and have exactly the game you want.
