I loved JRPGs as a kid and I just could not figure out what the gently caress was going on with SaGa Frontier for PS1. I remember just walking around the towns for a long time trying to figure out where to go to advance the story, and the battle system made no sense to me as a dumb kid who only knew stuff like the FF series. I'd probably still hate it.

Also, I had a lovely fighting game called Cardinal Syn for ps1 that I wanted to like but thought sucked.

Isn't that the case with all SaGa games? Complete nonsense

That's true, except the GameBoy SaGa games (called Final Fantasy Legend here in the states) are all really solid and I liked them all a ton, especially 3, when I was a kid. I had no idea that they were the same series as that garbage ps1 game until much later though. Also a contender for this thread is every simpsons game, except the arcade game, which is still a bad game.

SaGa games can be cool once you understand how their systems work, though the only one I've ever put any time into is SaGa Frontier and it has an incredible grind especially since each story you start from scratch and have to grind all over again. Since the final boss of every story is a mountain of HP and healing is limited you have to be able to poo poo out a ton of damage very quickly to beat them.

I love SaGa but they're all weird enough I won't fault anyone who doesn't. FF Legend II is an all time favorite of mine but I can easily envision someone getting pissed off with the obtuse systems or monsters being a worthless party slot for 90% of the game.

I don't recall that I ever really truely hated a game as a kid (despite owning Deadly Towers) so I'll just give this award to Rogue Legacy, whose devs should be killed.

Did you know that there are remakes of all of the FF Legend games for DS? They're Japan only but 2 and 3 have translation patches. I played through 3 and it was pretty alright. I didn't realize how much that music is burned into my brain.

Yeah I heard they got translated so they're in my backlog now. Would be cool if they came to switch though.

Don't think I can hate a game but closest would be games that intentionally waste my time because the dev wanted to be a movie director, I like MaxPayne3 but I don't play it much because of the endless unskippable breaks in gameplay.

That reminds me, I was really young when Rise of the Robots came out, but even at age 7 I knew that that game was absolute garbage. It's probably not the worst game I've ever played but it's certainly the worst by a large margin that I can think of, and that's saying something.

Earthworm Jim 64. Like I knew from my Official Nintendo Magazine that Clayfighter was bad but I just found stuff like that weird and sort of fun in that way kids do. Earthworm Jim made me realise that some stuff was just really bad and I hated it.

I got to tell the lead developer this on Twitter a few weeks ago and he apologised for it existing and said it should never have shipped lol

Lmao yeah except it was like 20 hours. I ordered the version with the dumb coin and everything and thought it was the best game ever and then something clicked and I went insane and based my identity around hating it for like two years.

I got banned from the Bethesda forums for saying I didn't like it but they said it was for posting porn in threads I'd never posted in.
