Isn't like 60 percent of Kamala Kahn's personality that she's a Carol Danvers fangirl?

and they gotta save Monica Rambeau for when Marvel wants to do the MCU version of Suicide Squad, AKA Nextwave.

Also yeah Kamala's entire deal is that she's a huge superhero nerd and she especially loves Carol

Kinda have to set that up

Also nextwave sucks also you will never see DC call Captain Marvel that and not Shazam because they can only use the name in a story, they can't use it as a title or in any way that could be considered marketing or advertising

I loving hate comics so much. I tried to watch those stupid marvel movies and got an hour into the one with the Thanos character because the whole movie kept doing the equivalent of pausing itself and looking me in the eyes to say "SEE YOU KNOW THAT CHARACTER, HE'S FUNNY" and I couldn't help but think about Adorno's ideas about cultural degeneration due to the influence of capital

I think Firefly had a scene where one of the quirky awesomesauce characters plays with his toys coming up with hilarious witty banter for them. It's so meta it might be the one genuinely clever thing Joss Whedon ever wrote.

So sounds like he's still writing for the avengers movies then?

I'll admit that I liked firefly despite its Libertarian ethos and faux snappy dialogue but that avengers stuff felt like some sort of ersatz brain-damaged clone of Whedon had written it

comic movies seem to dwarf actual written comics to such a degree when you say "comics" you can more or less safely be understood to be referring to the enormous industrial merchandising powerhouse, I guess. though maybe I'm underestimating the popularity of contemporary comics

superheroes just suck. someone in this thread I think recommended something called Marshal Law about beating up superheros and I've been reading that and its pretty good. it seems like there was a brief period in the 80s where the reaction to Reagan and Thatcher produced some awesome cynical graphic novels but they feel very different to me than the garbage xmen comics I read in the 90s or the awful movies that everyone seems to love

for one thing, most comics actually sound like they're written by different people and dont have completely interchangable fight scenes that are finished before the book even starts

It gets maybe a little too on the nose when it turns into a literal sociological essay on superheroes, but I figure it serves the same purpose as the literary analysis part in The Iron Dream, because with genre readers you can never be too explicit to be taken literally

the modern snappy witty dialogue thing kinda engulfs most comics now as a result of Brian Michael Bendis and Joss Whedon pioneering it and it always amuses me when fans have a (deserved) hateboner for either of them and still love most of the dreck that follows in their footsteps.

should probably be a thread like the #woke thread on this stuff and the delicate related topics around creating a sort of cultural autism (would happily adopt a less loaded term) where people become unable to infer internal states and motivations of characters without these cartoonish cues even in other braindead popular media, also probably related to the division of attention in the netflix + phone national ritual, and how this plays out socially and politically

theres a reddit (lol) that people send me stuff from sometimes thats movie secrets or something, that's literally just C-student reading comprehension of movies, like "in pulp fiction, there's a case that all the characters want, but if you pay attention its never actually shown what's in the case!" or "in wall-e, the humans in the future are fat because they've become complacent and lazy!". people construct their entire identities around movie consumption but either fail or are disinterested to have even a child's understanding of the sequence of events they're watching

nerds obsessing with "decoding" production details for deep meaning in films while getting incensed at people who do interpretive reading of films' thematic content was bad enough, but at least that was some kind of active engagement, instead of "in star wars, leia actually knew there wasnt a rebel base on dantooine, she just wanted to mislead darth vader!"

Yeah, this is what bothers me the most. The "witty" dialog dwarfs the characters' individual personalities. Having one smartass in a movie is fine. Having a movie full of smartasses really isn't. It gets old really fast. Imagine if Friends had six Chandlers instead of just one. It would have been much, much worse.

The reason it reminds me of a kid playing with his toys is because it's very much going through the motions style of writing. For instance I didn't believe for a second the rivalry between Captain America and Tony Stark in Avengers. I mean yeah the pieces are there, one is a dutiful soldier and the the other an egoistical billionaire. You can see how it would happen, but there's zero time or care given to let the dynamic develop naturally. Instead it jumps straight to the conclusion like a child re-enacting a cool movie scene and comes across more like the writer is just showing off how many witty one-liners he can come up with than a real script.
