I know his position means he's stopping, but that light trail really makes it look like Hal is about to crash into Batman and Bats is too stubborn to move.

Otoyomegatari, The Bride's Story, by the mangaka Kaoru Mori just recently celebrated it's 10 years of serialisation in October and I figured I'd do a bit of a dump of some of the cover pages of each chapter. The series tells the tales of several people, particularly Brides, on the Silk Road during the 19th Century. It's an absolutely amazing historical work and well worth your time should you seek it out. I absolutely adore her attention to detail in pretty much every page that gets released. Her line work in particular is just sublime (Sorry if this is too many pages. Tried to limit it as much as possible)

davidspackage posted:Jesus Christ, that linework. Yeah, that's really strong. Every line counts and describes something rather than being just about style like Lee, Leifeld and McFarlane are guilty of a lot. Reminds me a little of Bernie Wrightson's incredible illustrations for Frankenstein. I'm always impressed with artists who don't feel a need to draw lines around everything and instead allow for contrast and textural patterns to describe depth and form. Took me a long time to learn this and it's one of the best things I absorbed in art school. Too many artists start with outlining every shape in a piece and then fill them in, which is also largely how most comics are actually produced - pencils + inks + color and most times it really shows. Pencils: lines/where everything is inks: Shadows/texture/contrast Color: Paint by numbers usually Which is why a ton of comics look a lot like coloring books.

Kaoru Mori is wonderful. It's not quite as much a showcase for her gorgeous art, but her earlier comic Emma is a great period melodrama with the same eye for historical detail and texture.

Along those lines, I still marvel at how well MAD Magazine used to render characitures in their movie parodies considering how limited their reference material must have been. They had to have been provided with stills from the films or something. Anyone know?
