Some of them have to show up for work, some of them stay home without pay, but pretty much always get back pay. Of course most of them aren't going to be able to take the hit of surviving however many months without pay to enjoy it...

Half the furloughed workers are required to work without pay, the other half are required to stay home without pay. So theoretically assuming the ones who are staying home get back pay and manage to not get evicted, it will be free time off for them.
