yeah it's especially bad because you're more expected to main a hero (since you buy them after all). i bet the vast vast majority of my games are either sion or yorick. i really enjoyed old sion and old yorick and they totally ruined them.

dota sometimes does hero reworks but it's when a hero just doesn't work at all and is incredibly rare. usually they'll just change one skill in an attempt to fix the hero. even when they do what amounts to a full rework they tend to keep the ultimate or something like that (see bloodseeker rework).

Why does it have to be either or? They left money on the table by not providing the people who DID play the game with sufficient ways to spend their money. Obviously them blowing money on esports when the game wasn't even done was another huge factor, and like you said, missing key features for years also pushed people away, but they had enough people playing the game for 4 years that they kept investing in it. If they had actually tried harder to sell people something, they might have made more money and could have kept the ship running a bit longer.

You are acting like the game came out and died within a year or two. It didn't.

Let's be honest. It's limped along since 1.0. The genre was already in decline, and players were too invested in LoL and Dota 2 to unlock the pricey roster in HOTS.

"In decline" by what standards? They are still among some of the most played games to this day, which would mean there were even more players 3-4 years ago.

As for your opinion on monetization, HotS didn't make enough money and a large number of people who played and enjoyed the game have all expressed that there was a lack of things to spend money on in the game, likewise, there are people who never really got into the game who felt the heroes themselves were too expensive for what the game was. 2.0 was Blizzard adding more monetization into the game, technically. It didn't work because even though there were more microtransactions in the game with 2.0, there wasn't actually more content worth buying. Lootboxes and boosts to get them quicker aren't very effective when there is relatively very little that you can get from them that is desirable. The fact that you seem to think that them making more content for people to buy is the same as "more monetization" kind of shows that perhaps you are not understanding what people are talking about here.

HOTS seemed to have a respectably sized community, at least before esports died.it wasn't as big as Dota or LoL, obviously, but it wasn't like HOTS has been some bizarre ghost town of a game populated only by the diehard fans. The game died because Activision pulled the plug on it because despite a decently sized user base, it wasn't making money, which points to the problem as being primarily monitization.

It has like 5% of the player base (i'm making this up ofc) and most of the same expenses as dotalol, and blizzard is bad at doing things so there would be far more staff than you'd ever imagine. Free to play games have to either be cheap, really cheap to develop or big, really big in terms of popularity and hots is neither.

According to this data research company, in april 2018 hots had 6.5m MAU. Of course, 99% of those probably didn't give a poo poo about heroes esports, but that is still a solid number of players.

That report does not share its methodology and 6.5 million does not pass the smell test to me. Hard to comment on when I have no idea how the number was derived.

If the game was actually cancelled while having half of dota 2's numbers I would be um confused.

What are people thinking with Imperius’ talents? His damage boosting talents mostly don’t seem super impactful so i built him tanky (block from W, level 1 spear quest, damage reduction on spears) and that seemed alright but

The shield seems the clear winner on ults tho. Wrath of the Angiris is way too short range.

If they truly had that many players the matchmaking would not have been so bad, and queue times not 10minutes plus for ranked etc.

I think they said the majority of games were ai and qm.

Anecdotally I had over 50min queues in high master low gm hl a couple months ago, which is when I stopped playing unless it was a scrim

I don't get why people would say the game looked unfinished, when this game clearly had way more effort put into then lots of it's competitors. Like the fact that HotS has like 15 different maps puts it way above LoL in the effort area.

At a Blizzcon they said the breakdown was something like (I'm working from memory) 55% QM, 25% ranked, 15% unranked, 5% TL without mentioning AI. I have to imagine there were/are a LOT of people playing AI though because the few times I played vs AI on NA I had sub-10 second queues every time. I'd totally believe as many people play AI as QM.

I mean compare it to Dota, there is no spectating your friends or tournaments in game, there is a non functional reconnect feature, there was no voice chat for ages (and what they came up with was pretty terrible), the matchmaking even. They had a pretty good hero release pace but they were so expensive.

ToastyPotato

^In addition to that stuff:

They had no functional ranked mode for almost a year and even when they added it it took them several months to add a ban system to draft, despite all of these things existing for years in the other games. It took them like 4 years to realize their role definitions were wrong and to just announce the change. It's been a few months and they still haven't patched the updated roles in.

What's with the eh... bretonnian dance, sir?

Of all the things to gripe about, HotS's voice chat is very much not one of them, they pretty much nailed it in one go, which is one of those things that frequently never even pan out in the end for some devs.

Speaking of skins, while it wouldn't have saved the game it still strikes me as odd that they didn't make skins from the other main series for each hero, instead opting for just very generic themes. They could even sweeten the deal by having a series skin count for quests. I know there were a lot of times I'd log on, not feel like playing anything that would fit my quests, and log off.

Supposedly the early concept for HotS was for the heroes to mix and match stuff, like Thrall having a hi-tech starcraft inspired hammer and such?

i kinda thought that was a clever idea and was always waiting for them to do something with it. Like releasing a character who combined a warcraft paladin with a diablo paladin, or like a Zerg that died and was raised as a warcraft undead or something. Maybe it would have worked better as a customization system--either as presets that change character stats (like LoL Runes) or as decisions you make in-game to customize your character's direction (like talents or something).

Dropping turrets and just walking in circles while people get shot to death is 💯

This was one of my favorite builds of any hero when I just started playing. I got into it again recently when I realized that not only do I barely ever see anyone play Gazlowe, they NEVER go for turret spam.

I love setting up an array of turrets that don't look that threatening, really spaced out. Good lane control or whatever. Then you bait someone into chasing you through the gauntlet and - Hey! You, uh, don't need that wallet anymore do ya?

It's a fun little mind game to set them up so the person you're laning against can't hit them all with their AoE skill no matter which way they target it. Scooting around like you're about to dive someone, drop a stun bomb and rush towards them, but actually you just wanted to pick up the scrap pieces over there.

I like Probius for the same reasons as well. He's rarely picked, and can set up extremely punishing traps that a lot of players will fall for.

Controlling man and bear at the same time is interesting but I'm struggling to see what I'm really even supposed to be trying to do during fights. Either I keep rexar back and my team complains about how I don't do anything, or I play a little more aggressively and rexar gets gibbed instantly
