His choice not to try to get into the house, to weirdly wait on the sidelines and basically erode the presence the NDP had on the national stage, combined with the same kind of generic rhetoric on progress the is only mildly, mildly better than the nothing Trudeau provides.

E: There's no point to the NDP if it won't significantly differentiate itself from the Liberals. Otherwise it dooms itself to being Liberal-lite forever.

the current NDP is co-opted by centrists who use it to disenfranchise the young who have funny ideas about better things being possible

it can be turned around but it will take a concentrated effort to do so, and not enough left people are really politically active in canada to do that

I volunteered for the party and asked to be included in any activities they were looking for help on. And they called me once to stuff envelopes asking for donations. That was it.

I don't know, something more. I wanted to canvas or fundraise or something, or at least talk with people to see if other action could be taken. The provincial NDP candidate for my riding (who won) was and is much more involved and holds regular meetings and townhalls and stuff. But the NDP is just electoralism, I was naive to expect anything else, I realize now.

In times like this it's important to remember that while we like to think of politics as a horse race where everything is either a win or a loss for Trudeau or Singh or Scheer as individuals, actually politics affects all of us and the things that happen are wins or losses for millions of people. Passing something like pharmacare wouldn't be a win for the NDP, it would be a win for Canada as a whole, while doing things like buying pipelines that can't be built may be a loss for Trudeau, but it's also a loss for the entire country.

Canada’s minister for public safety says far-right, white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups are an increasing concern and threat to Canadians.

Ralph Goodale said the groups promote hate, which manifests itself in violent anti-Semitism or in other crimes.

“The van attack along Yonge Street in Toronto earlier last year had those kinds of roots,” Goodale said Tuesday after a speech on national security at the University of Regina.

Ten people died in April 2018 when Alek Minassian allegedly drove a rental van down the busy stretch, mowing down pedestrians.

Goodale also used the example of six people murdered inside a Quebec City mosque in 2017 because they were at prayer.

He said the suspects were inspired by what they saw on the Internet.

People are rightfully focusing on how insanely awful the OSAP change is, but the "no student fees" is a big deal too. The point of the move is to deny campus organizations funding. I remember about a decade ago when people from Queen's snuck someone into an OPC youth meeting and got a recording of people there (most notably Kevin Wiener, who sometimes gets RTed in the Canadian politics twitter hellsphere) talking about a campaign to make student fees non-mandatory with the goal of gutting OPIRG.

That's part of the whole package, yes. That's obviously a good thing to a degree but also of far smaller magnitude than the bad things.

Taking this guy at his word, this amounts to a 450 million dollar cut from higher education, half of which will directly go to wealthier families, and the other half of which will surely get there later through some form of tax cut.
