Seriously just cancel it, there isn't any reason to listen to Trump rattle off some more idiocy and bullshit, at least there isn't any good reason to dress it up in ceremony. If he wants to bullshit his way through another SOTU he can tweet it out from his golden commode. Especially since state of the union is that it's loving shutdown atm because of his and McConnell's maliciousness.

The given reason is that with the government shut down the resources and personnel aren't there to properly secure a joint session of Congress attended by the President.

The real reason is that this is within Pelosi's power to do unilaterally so Trump loses a prime preening session and goes back to ~fuming~ in the White House. He can deliver the mandated update on the state of the union through some other process.

you'd see even more support for redistribution and other evil socialist policies if americans had a realistic view of inequality in this country (they think wealth is distributed far more evenly than it is).

quote:

In their study, Norton and Kiatpongsan asked about 55,000 people around the globe, including 1,581 participants in the U.S., how much money they thought corporate CEOs made compared with unskilled factory workers. Then they asked how much more pay they thought CEOs should make. The median American guessed that executives out-earned factory workers roughly 30-to-1—exponentially lower than the highest actual estimate of 354-to-1. They believed the ideal ratio would be about 7-to-1.

...

In the second experiment, Ariely and Norton asked participants to guess how wealth was distributed in the United States, and then to write how it would be divvied up in an ideal world (this, it seems, served as the template for Norton’s most recent study). Americans had little idea how concentrated wealth truly was. Subjects estimated that the top 20 percent of U.S. households owned about 59 percent of the country’s net worth, whereas in the real world, they owned about 84 percent of it. In their own private utopia, subjects said that the top quintile would claim just 32 percent of the wealth.

Yeah, I was on a debate team in college for like a week, because I didn't realize what it was. There's literally no point to it, because the arguments that win are unconvincing IRL and also the people that are actually into it are literally all clones of Ben Shapiro.

I don't know, it's interesting to read the Lincoln-Douglas debates where there's a level of detail and substantive argument that's just absent in modern televised debates. It makes me wonder if all the old men yelling at clouds have a point and we've all got stupid.

Might be better to transpose that so the income and taxes a "trickling down" from the top. Then extend the bars for the additional 170,000 pixels. Additionally, maybe add a second bar next to each group showing the total share of income taxed (cumulative) as the net effect.

Also, I think you have a typo. The groups go 30%, 5%, 95%... I assume the second group was supposed to be 50%?

Otherwise, I like it!

Yeah modern debate is basically structuring arguments so that the rules of the argument (as defined by the debate organization) are more important that the substance. It's how well can you learn these specific conversational rules which I guess is useful in a court system or something but outside of that setting has no worth.
