Sorry to be a late comer to the party but from what I'm reading on a possibly sketchy discord, the shutdown has already gone on long enough that the IRS is saying there will be delays in refunds? For me that's just a delay in how long it takes me to earn 0.05% interest or whatever on that money, but given how many people count on it to eat, aren't we looking at a potentially serious kind of unrest? I'm trying not to catastrophize, and in fact, major civil unrest wouldn't impact my daily very much, but the idea concerns me. A lot.

Do we still not know how much people should be getting back? Am I going to wake up one day and suddenly owe 500 bucks or something?

Honestly, the new tax law makes a lot of that kind of nebulous but if you don't have any dependents (and didn't in 2017) I probably wouldn't worry about owing more.
