If she would have lost, it would have meant new elections. A second referendum is still in the cards now that she survived, but the possibility of a no-deal Brexit have also increased. At least a new general election would have meant an almost certain extension of the deadline.

Well, it's complicated. May doesn't want to hold a second referendum, but neither does the leader of the opposition, Jeremy Corbyn. But a lot of members of parliament want one. It's all kinds of crazy right now, because a big majority of MPs is against May's deal, and a (differen) majority is against no-deal Brexit (including May and Corbyn). And there might also be a majority against a second referendum. But sooner or later they will have to agree on something, or they will crash out of the EU by default. Right now, it's anybody's guess whether Brexit will be delayed/abolished, or if there will be a no-deal Brexit, or if there actually is a deal that can get a majority in the Commons and the backing of the EU.

Yeah, it's honestly fascinating as an outsider looking in. There are all kinds of crazy things going on.

Take Jeremy Corbyn. He's the most left wing major party leader of any party in the West. Like straight up nationalization of key industries, strong regulations of the economy, big redistribution, sack the rich, etc. He's been against British EU membership because the EU is a neoliberal institution, and his downright socialist policies would be illegal under EU law. He's been in favor for Brexit for decades, and was never shy about that. He's also the darling of the Labour party base.

But the Labour MPs are mostly Tony Blair third way liberals. Meaning they are fans of deregulation, the free market, etc. They hate Jeremy Corbyn. They even had a vote of no confidence in him, which triggered a new leadership election in the Labour party. But as I said, the base loves him, so he easily won reelection. And those liberal Labour MPs are of course strongly against Brexit. Both because they are genuinely Europhiles, and because they are a bit afraid what would happen if Brexit happens and Jeremy Corbyn becomes prime minister, possibly implementing his far left agenda.

It also doesn't help the whole process that big minorities in both parties didn't vote for the party orthodoxy. A huge part of the working class Labour base voted Leave, and a huge number of cosmopolitan Tories voted Remain. Both parties are deeply divided over Brexit. Neither Labour nor Tories can agree among themselves whether the UK should leave the EU, or what form a break with the EU should have. And so of course there can also be no agreement between the parties.

Add to this the fact that few things scare Tories as much as the prospect of a Jeremy Corbyn government. A genuinely left wing prime minister, the horror! Because that's what's keeping Theresa May in office. Tories are deeply afraid that a new general election will sweep Corbyn to power, with Britain not even in the EU to temper his "worst" impulses. And of course, no conservative wants to challenge her for the job, because they now Brexit will be a shitshow that will sink their career. May can't bring her MPs to support her agenda, but neither can the MPs dump her.

There are all kinds of prisoner's dilemmas going on, it's super screwed up.

The State of the Union is basically all bullshit, has always been bullshit, and isn't even directly in the Constitution.

I don't think a SotU has ever been cancelled, but technically, it's not a set thing. We've come to accept them as the yearly yammering of the President in front of Congress, but there's no actual event mandated. Some Presidents never even had a State of the Union Address!

the report posted:

GSA’s analysis should have considered whether the Foreign Emoluments Clause or the Presidential Emoluments Clause of the U.S. Constitution barred the President’s business interest in Tenant. We found that GSA, through its OGC and PBS, recognized that the President’s business interest in the OPO lease raised issues under the Constitution’s Emoluments Clauses that might cause a breach of the lease, but decided not to address those issues in connection with the management of the lease. We also found that OGC improperly ignored these Emoluments Clauses, even though the lease itself requires compliance with the laws of the United States, including the Constitution. In addition, we found that GSA’s unwillingness to address the constitutional issues affected its analysis of Section 37.19 and the decision to grant Tenant an Estoppel Certificate.
