I don't have accurate numbers, just pulling numbers out of my rear end. But I did find this, only 19.5% of all income tax receipts are payed by households that have an AGI under 100k. 80.5% of tax receipts are payed by people who make more then 100k. The top 1%, people who make more then 500k, pay 38.3% of all income tax receipts. There was 1.5 trillion in income tax receipts for FY15 so ~575 billion was payed by the top 1% and thats with only a 27% effective tax rate. Drive that effective tax rate up to 70% and you get an additional 900 billion dollars or so a year assuming a linear relationship (big assumption). Target unearned income and you can easily pay for whatever you need. This is quick napkin math so it might not be exact (or even close) Needless to say I don't see M4A as a financial burden on the working class. http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2017/10/06/a-closer-look-at-who-does-and-doesnt-pay-u-s-income-tax/ft_17-10-04_taxes_stats/

Just a reminder that this is Not Normal, but I can't tell you how Not Normal it is: https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2019/01/marci-whitaker-email-matthew-whitaker-attorney-general.html Some of this is a little bit ambiguous, like her saying "the investigation is wrapping up", maybe that is just an opinion from public news, but is the wife of the AAG publicly commenting on an investigation her husband is overseeing? Something tells me that Whittaker and his family are not that bright.

Groovelord Neato posted:it's hilarious mcdonalds got owned but the ruling is incredibly bad. It's actually fine. the "genuine use" part relates to this quote:The “big mac” was registered in Europe both as a food and under a category for restaurant names. This meant that McDonald’s could call a restaurant “big mac”. As a result of that, it was able to argue that if the Supermac’s name was successfully trademarked, it could cause confusion for customers. So basically the EUIPO just ruled that McDonald's does not, in fact, call its restaurants "Big Macs", no poo poo. Of course, media outlets chose to report it in the dumbest way possible and I guess people just assume that they are better patent attorneys than the EUIPO

God Derek Kilmer is such a gawky dork but I can't help but love him. I had a chance to meet with him a few times when he was a WA State Rep and he's just an affable goober. Pretty middling Dem typical for our state though, all his mailers are very bland appeals for bipartisan solutions and other political weasel words/phrases that don't really say poo poo.

It can be hard to find the exact info you're looking for, but the Tax Policy Center has really useful numbers for stuff like this. https://www.taxpolicycenter.org/model-estimates/baseline-distribution-income-and-federal-taxes-august-2018/t18-0063-baseline https://www.taxpolicycenter.org/model-estimates/baseline-distribution-income-and-federal-taxes-august-2018/t18-0065-baseline It's great because they have estimates on a cash income basis, so you don't have to dance around rich people AGI vs real income issues and so on. They also try to do numbers for current policy as opposed to current law, when it's safe to assume Congress is going to do something it always does (like how the AMT patch used to be).
