Yeah, carving out your own little place in the world feels like how it's meant to be played, but there is definitely room for alternative ways of playing.

Frankly I shove most of my fighters into Samauri Boots once I can, because every bit of not being hurt helps and it is super annoying to finish a fight to find people limping and slow. Splinting only helps so much and if newbies are being outright knocked unconscious and it was a tough fight you cannot necessarily carry everyone who is slowing you down. Later game? Well specialist quality Samauri Boots only lower athletics by 15% whilst giving 70% cutting resistance and over 50% blunt resistance, that is a lot of armour even if it only triggers 40% of the time.

Samurai boots suck. It's either sandals, drifters boots or masterwork plated longboots (no athletics penalty at masterwork) for me. Athletics penalty for 40% leg coverage is... not good and sandals own in spite of looking a bit goofy depending on whatever else you are wearing. If they aren't masterwork there's even a combat speed penalty on there too. Combat speed is real important. EDIT: Having less leg protection is fine anyways. Sometimes your leg gets cut off but this is an opportunity once you are established, not a bad thing. Scout legs in particular own a lot. As an added bonus, if your leg gets hosed up next time you can repair kit it and limping is not a problem. Nuclearmonkee fucked around with this message at 17:18 on Jan 17, 2019 |

If you're running in a group with some Shek, then your speed is generally going to be slowed down by the Shek anyways. All the bonus speed doesn't matter for most squad movement if it takes you over your slowest buddy. 5% combat speed's nice but if that's your only bonus combat speed then eh, survivability's better. Stack it or don't. Especially against security spiders that can yank off your limbs if you let them. You can just pull off your boots if you're in full retreat and outrun anyone else whether or not you're wearing sandals. Although yes absolutely missing limbs are really just a reason to get better ones.

Highest leg hp and lowest speed. In the event they lose a leg due to naked feets it's a positive and now you've got a badass with a scout leg.

I could see dropping heavy armor for combat speed penalties, but for athletics? The difference on higher levels of that is minuscule.

What are the best ways to make money starting off? I'm only a few hours in but so far I'm still having trouble saving enough funds to recruit even the cheapest NPCs, so far I'm just wandering around with Ruka and one other Shek I got for 3000. Other than that mining, thievery, and looting bandits seems to only ever net me a few hundred cats at a time after I've gone and paid for food, bandages, and beds for my party in between travels.

Hang around Squin or other cities, waiting for bandits or animals to make suicide attacks on the guards. Then loot them before the guards can lock them up. Alternatively you can just lure the enemies to the guards yourself, but that can require a fast runner.

If you want a few thousand cash quick, west of Squin there is a Shek Ruin. Go there and press ALT, it will highlight all lootable items on the floor, and there's almost always 3-4 chain shirts laying around, these can be worth a lot. Another way is to head for the Hiver Village North West of the Hub. Try luring Beak Things or Gorillos to the village and let the guards kill them. Take their skins, and sell them in the local general store.

three major ways of making money early: "stealing" (picking up stuff lying around) in town not in boxes always succeeds and increases your steal skill, just drop and pick up stuff over and over until you've got it as high as you like, then steal and sell to the town next door mining copper is a boring but slow and steady and relatively safe way of getting cash, you can buy a small shack in town or just found a small village with nothing in it but and ore and food store and just run away with your food every raid training things into town guards and then looting the corpses - insulting mercenary companies until they attack you and then running to tell guard mommy is the best because they have expensive gear

I've used mercenaries from the Waystation nearby to raid the Band of Bones camp south of Squin to collect the 10k bounty + loot. Used the other 22 hours of merc time to just murder bandits and collect their loot or hunt animals to start up my leather working and a pile of meat, they can easily handle Garru and whatnot. If you're feeling extra cheesy you can do the same thing to the Dust King for even more cash and loot

Steal poo poo man. Wait until night, break into shops and just take whatever isn't in a container. It won't trigger any checks to get caught and you'll level your stealth and thievery skills real quick. After a short while you can start taking stuff from chests and safes. You'll make loads of bank and since you can apply the ol five finger discount to whatever gear that takes your fancy you can direct all your cash to hiring companions and mercs, joining the ninjas, and buying some property. Also, if your assassination skill isn't terrible you can knock out sleeping residents and never have a chance to get caught when stealing from containers.

Totally works on awake residents, too. One of my favourite strategies is basically a standard shoplifter team: one guy positions himself behind the shopkeeper or any guards, the others run around like dumbasses to attract their attention. Since NPCs have vision cones, they can only barely notice you if you have decent stealth values and are behind them. Knock 'em all out, grab all the stuff, make out like a bandit.

It is also possible to train Stealth by putting one of your characters on stealth mode then setting them to follow anyone who is moving in town. Leave them for a day or three and they will turn into some kind of absurd super ninja. A character with 80+ stealth wearing appropriate gear can in low light conditions literally walk in front of somebody without them noticing, it can be a huge help in combat because you have your 'loud' characters engage then the ninja knocks somebody unconscious every few seconds. At least with high assassination. On which note you can train up assassination VERY quickly by attempting to knock out people with high toughness, even if you fail every time to start with. I have seen somebody go from 0 to 7 with one 0% chance attempt.

Hivers are so cute. When you go to their village with humans or shek, they'll follow after you going "flop! flop! flop! " while you're running because those feet things are weird and awesome. And then they go "aww... " when you stop and return to their work.

Some of the wandering traders will advertise "coverings for your ankle hands" and it took me a second to realize they meant shoes and not some sort of weird splints. "Ankle hands" is such a good turn of phrase for them to use.

That's adorable. Hivers are just so endearingly earnest about everything, I don't know how the Holy Nation can manage to hate them. I've butchered thousands of people and animals in this game and the only thing I ever felt bad about was when I made a Hiver trader sad by not coming out to trade with him. He sounded so depressed about not getting to show me all his awesome stuff.

Hivers were one of the great design decisions in kenshi, I can only assume that right after the dev made blood spiders and beak things he went, 'oh poo poo I've gotta balance this out' and thus we got hivers

I always buy something from a hiver. Even if I throw it into the item furnace at my base later. My master ninja has just about fully leveled their stealth. Since clothing bonuses don't let you go past 100 for stealth, what should I start switching the armor pieces out for? I already switched the pants for drifters pants. I've got a dark leather shirt and assassins rags. My hat is ashlanders hat. I also have a black dustcoat in inventory for when I need to go somewhere acidic. Anything else I should look at?

I always put nests at max. Do that and then build a walled settlement in the Vain. A company of Beak Things will be your personal defense force, basically. Nothing ever attacks me because no one can. The downside is that this also includes caravans, who tend to get themselves sadly eaten. Here's a little trick I just figured out, based on the quirks of the outpost system: it doesn't count as an outpost unless you place actual buildings. I've gotten into the habit of placing storage boxes around ore heaps and just parking a few guys there. They'll fill them up for me and I just need to send over a pack garru ever so often to fetch the resources. They never get attacked because storage in itself doesn't count as a location. It's pretty convenient. If you need them, just leave the stuff right there. Nobody touches it.

Mercs are mediocre samurai. Tech hunters are the badasses but their teams are only like a few dudes for the same price. In dangerous places, mercs for fodder for your excellent samurai or tech hunters to bolster your excellent samurai.
