eke out posted:yesterday used anonymous DOJ sources to say that the SCO's statement was meant to tell everyone categorically that buzzfeed's reporting was wrong, period. It did seem strange that Buzzfeed said they gave the SCO an opportunity to respond before the piece came out and got no answer, but if it truly was the DOJ demanding a response then it makes sense it took so long for one to come out. Saying something contains inaccuracies is a far cry from wholesale denying the story, and it seems like they are basically corroborating the story except for some minor factual errors. That is quite minimal of a denial for a forced response which does not look good for the Trump team.

Point is, every time you see who of these idiot bigots being bigoted videos, remember that this isn't the first time they've done it. poo poo, this isn't even the first time they've done it in public. Man, as a high school educator, gotta say that teachers and parents failed those kids. Like they were loving horrible but it looks like the culture at their school was a breeding ground for being horrible. I know that in my time teaching kids would occasionally say abhorrent poo poo, but part of teaching was educating kids away from doing that and building a classroom culture where disrespect of that nature wasn't tolerated. I'm not sure how to feel about them being doxxed and called out on social media. On the one hand, I believe in the herd correcting the behavior of shitheads. Part of a strong classroom culture is empowering students to engage in a little corrective social exclusion of toxic assholes until they stop being toxic. On the other hand, I don't know that the twitter herd has the nuance to accept any personal growth on the part of these kids. I certainly hope they figure out how lovely their actions were and apologize and change their behaviors but it feels more likely that they retreat to their comfort zones and get reinforced in being lovely by a school that evidently doesn't try to teach them empathy for cultures other than white conservative Catholicism.

I feel ya on that too, kids need space to grow and make mistakes that won't haunt them the rest of their lives. But they also can't be allowed to normalize or internalize racism either. I don't know the right answer unfortunately--I'm just happy I grew up without access to all this stuff because I'm sure I would have made mistakes I'd be regretting today. There probably needs to be a huge focus on educating kids how to be a citizen of the internet--that just because you're behind a keyboard or an anonymous handle doesn't mean you aren't hurting people or creating problems that will haunt you for the rest of your life. Like sex ed it needs to be early and everywhere.

About the catholic school kid stuff: I didn't realize until I started watching the full video that the group was doing the tomahawk chop, which is even worse. I feel like it's one thing to ironically dance and clap, but to invoke faux-native imagery is another. Like it's now explicitly "haha he's a native american how funny is that", there's not even a veneer of "we were just celebrating his music!". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIG5ZB0fw1k

I'd argue that once these kids reach the point of harassing elderly native protesters they've also reached the point where a more serious correction is warranted. It isn't a question of ignorance anymore. They know they're being openly bigoted—i.e., the cruelty is the point—and they expect to get away with it. It's unfortunate their parents and schools failed them so miserably, but if you pull them aside at this point and try to shout sense into them, then you'd get the same smug "U MAD?" face that kid in the video is making. Greater social consequences might not even get through to them, but it at least reminds everyone that this poo poo should not be acceptable.

Fairly significant explanation of the biggest issue/risk factor with the shutdown here: https://twitter.com/JStein_WaPo/status/1086737025955438593 The administration is exploiting the difficulty of suing over Antideficiency Act compliance to selectively ignore it.
