Yeah you think spiders are the eye kings? Their cousins the horseshoe crabs got them beat:Wikipedia posted:It has two compound lateral eyes, each composed of about 1,000 ommatidia, plus a pair of median eyes that are able to detect both visible light and ultraviolet light, a single endoparietal eye, and a pair of rudimentary lateral eyes on the top. The latter become functional just before the embryo hatches. Also, a pair of ventral eyes is located near the mouth, as well as a cluster of photoreceptors on the telson.

The horseshoe crab pool was the most boring part of the aquarium I worked in, but I loved watching the little dudes bonk into things for hours.

Pablo Bluth posted:8==================D quote:And then there is the coconut crab, a species that can grow up to nine pounds and only use shells as juveniles. The abdomens of coconut crabs re-calcify as they age, so they have no need of protective shells when fully mature. Coconut crabs have the tiniest penises of all, less than 20 percent of their body size. Lairdre suggests that this species of crab has no risk of losing its private property and thus natural selection did not endow it with enhanced penis size. Ouch. No wonder they were always cranky.

So who’s going to be first to extend this into a new theory of Social Darwinism? The more socio-economic security you have, the smaller your penis becomes.

Beet Wagon posted:crablab posts are good, thank you for sharing these crabs and also horseshoe crabs who are precious, stupid angels Growing up as a kid in Maryland, I always liked visiting my aunt and uncle on the eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay. I'd walk a couple blocks to the beach and flip over the hapless horseshoe crabs who were sitting there on their back waiting to get eaten by seagulls. Horsehoe crabs are good boys. Edit: I'd also go to the atlantic coast and dig up sand crabs, which aren't real crabs but are still awesome. If you held them in your hand they'd try to dig through it and it tickled like crazy. I picture the poor sand crab wondering what the gently caress was up with this weird sand.

Coconut crabs! I did a search, so who knows if I missed it, but I didn't see that anyone had posted this video of murdercrabs taking no pity on a bird. Crab grabs booby Related to this, one of my favorite article titles ever: A mighty claw: Pinching force of the coconut crab, the largest terrestrial crustacean I got to see a talk by the guy who filmed the bird-devouring. He does a lot of work on hermit crabs and how they select shells, as well as the coconut crab stuff. I think he was a bit taken aback by the enthusiasm I expressed for coconut crabs, because they're adorable gigantic monster crabs. I've only seen them preserved in jars, but someday...
