I’m assuming it’s an annual tax, so no, you don’t want to tax someone’s wealth at 20-30%, which would make them do absolutely reckless things to maintain that wealth. 2-3% is actually around the sweet spot because it’s slighlt more than inflation. I’d like to read Thomas Pickettys take on this.

I really hope this wealth tax becomes part of the Democratic Party plank in 2020. It’s more important than income tax. I’d probably vote for anyone that ran on it.

It's not the date anything particular happens or the date the climate gets bad or something.

I’d probably vote for anyone that ran on it. ¿Porque no los dos? Important to have both, imo. The wealth tax helps prevent continued accumulation at the top to a degree, yes, but there also needs to be a disincentive at some level of salary to continue to amass a larger and larger one such that some of those corporate revenues work their way down to lower-salaried employees. And so you also need to control things like stock buybacks as well, make that more expensive than it's worth. You can't just take money away from the rich, you need to incentivize natural distribution into the wider economy instead of just through government spending.

Dumbest question I've ever asked. Can we just shut off power at night to most people? What if like, use electricity during the day. At night, when it's dark. Just like, go to bed? Could they do that? I feel like maybe that would cut emissions a lot?

I don’t doubt that I could afford to live there but actually getting there is a challenge. My lease runs May-May which gives makes for a very short window to actually get a job and move. Then I need to have first/last saved up which isn’t too unmanageable. I’m making a big effort to pay off my debt this year so ideally I’ll be able to save to make the move easier after I’m debt free. I applied for a few jobs up there to try move in 2019, but didn’t get any. I guess I’ll try again for 2020.

The problem with a wealth tax is liquidating even 1-2% of everyone's wealth annually would lead to the stock market absolutely tanking and a massive shift of wealth to tax havens (even more than now). This might be your desired outcome, but it would not be popular.
