Skyways are bad for urbanism though, it kills life at the street level. Dress properly with layering and even sub-zero temps are mostly comfortable, I walk almost everywhere in winter and it really isn't that bad.

The computers at DFAS stopped paying him because as far as they were concerned, the only way you could stop being retired was by being dead.

Why on earth would a bridge between two buildings "kill life at the street level"? If it weren't there, the only difference would be a bigger crowd at the crosswalk in winter.

Most of the shops that would have street fronts are now on the 2nd floor walkways because you don't need to go outside.

Bingo. It was really like this walking in downtown HK if you wanted to stay in the AC. Less main street and more never-ending corridor in a mall.

Because people aren't walking on sidewalks, they're walking through buildings. In places like Minneapolis they're not simply a bridge between two buildings but a network of indoor corridors that let you walk all over a given area between potentially dozens of buildings.

Oh, I see, I looked it up and they're way more extensive in some cities than I imagined. I've only ever seen two buildings connected by a bridge.

Montreal has underground corridors between building downtown, people still use the streets when it’s not, you know, -40.

Because who wants to walk through a mall all day?

Well, they're non-Americans who have access to great public transit and a culture that appreciates a walkable urban lifestyle. Can't say that about most of America.

I've spent a limited amount of time in the DC suburbs but if Crystal City and Arlington are anything to judge by, even the parts of Alexandria close to the metro, it's pretty soulless. Luckily DC itself for the most part has one of the most vibrant and interesting cityscapes in America.

Jared Kushner's application for a top secret clearance was rejected by two career White House security specialists after an FBI background check raised concerns about potential foreign influence on him — but their supervisor overruled the recommendation and approved the clearance, two sources familiar with the matter told NBC News.

The official, Carl Kline, is a former Pentagon employee who was installed as director of the personnel security office in the Executive Office of the President in May 2017. Kushner's was one of at least 30 cases in which Kline overruled career security experts and approved a top secret clearance for incoming Trump officials despite unfavorable information, the two sources said. They said the number of rejections that were overruled was unprecedented — it had happened only once in the three years preceding Kline's arrival.

I've always been astonished by how Trump managed to find the shittiest possible people in career government positions, then promote them.

I'm less surprised by the amount of bullshit he manages to pull with the security state. That structure really is dependant on the President actually giving a poo poo about security and/or the future of the country.
