Pretty bold for a freshman

So as I read it it wouldn't penalize possession of less than 2 ounces and basically bumps up the enhancement thresholds

Can someone find where in existing state law they named it “marihuana” with an H because all the legalization bills are written like that and it drives me nuts

zoux
Apr 28, 2006

It was made illegal in Texas in 1923 so probably then.

I'm looking at captions of legislation passed then and we got some doozies

Does anyone know if the good people of Travis County yet languish under the tyranny of Fish Law

The birth of Ol' Sparky

e: Found it, SB 33, 3rd Called Session of the 38th Lege

In 1919, they made narcotics, including cannabis, illegal except for medical use, HB 96, 3rd Called Session of the 36th.

So that's probably the earliest mention of mariHuana in the state code

Also for those of you who don't follow journalists on twitter and therefore haven't seen about a thousand of them get laid off this week by BuzzFeed and HuffPo, there are two great non-profit journalism outfits in Texas that would love to have your money:

The Texas Observer: https://www.texasobserver.org/support-us/
This magazine was started by liberals in the 50s or 60s I believe and makes an appearance in The Gay Place. Not big (or even influential? idk) but they do good work.

The Texas Tribune: https://support.texastribune.org/donate
This is an online-only, state politics-focused, non-profit news website founded in 2009. Since then they've become probably the most influential news organization in the state among people who are involved in/keep tabs on state politics. They have the biggest state legislature news team in the country and also produce podcasts and events and whatever else you can think of.

There was a lot of skepticism when the Tribune launched, it was right when the big newspaper contraction hit Texas and the big bureaus were scaling back their state desks and offering extremely experienced and deeply sourced statehouse reporters buyouts, so it's really cool that they're doing so well. The non-profit model is a big part of it. Advertising lost to Facebook and Google definitely isn't helping, but shareholder demands for dividends also drive a lot of these firings.

Yeah theres a huge amount of talk about the rainy day fund. Everything from school finance to TRS to Harvey to Hazlewood. My guess is that nothing will get spent. Just another state bank account collecting money.

zoux

The Senate supplemental has $2.5 billion from it and HB1 has $633m.

Relevant numbers: $12.5b total at the start of the year, and an absolute floor of $7.5bn, as established by whatever advisory board makes that call every year

There's way more discussion about using that fund, like there is zero pushback from either party on those numbers and Hegar keeps telling the lege that they are just leaving money on the table by not letting him invest it more. Again, it's incredible what elections could do, all you have to do is lose a handful of seats and win statewide elections by 5% instead of 20% and you turn from a frothing tea party ideologue to a reasonable person

The other thing to note is that the vote count for 2018 was well over 8 million, so even if we pretend that the 58000 fraudulent votes claim isn't heinous equivocation, it still amounts to less than 0.8% of the total votes cast.

They're poo poo. Start working on getting your driver's license changed asap, because the process is a monstrous pain in the rear end specifically designed to make sure brown people can't get an ID to vote with.

Most states will allow you to transfer an out of state license. Texas doesn't. It's really loving obvious why.

Yes, you can vote without a license due to the ruling, but it's still a pain in the rear end if you want to drive anywhere.
