I’m advocating for making things as good for the worker, and consumer as possible. Ride sharing is one of those real-life, complex issues because while I understand it disrupted and upended and industry and that has had harsh effects on taxi drivers, there’s also no denying it’s had overwhelmingly good effects for the poor and working class. It’s also a hard issue, because if we’re talking about industries that make it harder than others to have sympathy for, my personal experiences taking cabs all my life have led me to believe the taxi industry on the whole is douchy and scandalous as gently caress, and has been for a very long time. And if ride sharing services stay the same as they are, and continue to operate in a grey area of private contractor-“gig economy”, I’m OK with that too, even if I’d prefer to see it resemble what the taxi industry could have been had they actually given a gently caress and cared about improving the industry as a whole, instead of maximizing financial extortion and grifting for medallion holders. heyitsamanda fucked around with this message at 00:37 on Jan 28, 2019 |

So every movie tilted towards more machine guns and less american corruption until it was 99% machine guns and 1% percent corruption.

All casinos in Vegas have a cab line that always has about five or six cabs waiting to take hotel guests to the airport. Any time we'd call for a cab they would send someone from the other side of town and it would take them about 45 minutes to get to us. This happened every single time. Half the time the driver wouldn't show up at all and we'd have to call a different company. They could have easily peeled off a driver from across the street but apparently that's not how this works. I feel like I've lost my mind. People scam you. If you regularly pass out in the back of a vehicle that is driven by someone who is paid by the length and/or time you're in the vehicle they're going to take the long way. No, but as a chick getting off my shift in downtown Miami/Brickell, it was epically life changing to be able to que up a reliable, non-scam artist ride for a fraction of my hard earned tips compared to the hit or miss cab driver, and WAY more often than not skeevy as hell cab driver. Oh, my cell phone died in the car because I’ve been at work all day and all the sudden the driver is acting hostile and I’m wondering what my options are? Happened more times than I can count. This poo poo isn’t uncommon, anyone who’s lived in major cities and taken cabs regularly, or lived in suburbs and needed a cab for whatever reason, will most likely attest to how hosed the taxi industry is/was. heyitsamanda fucked around with this message at 00:35 on Jan 28, 2019 |

Subway service didn't go to Marin before Lyft/Uber and there's no reason to believe it will after. Honestly uber exists mostly because the taxi industry simply failed to do any engagement in new technology. Like there is no reason every taxi company could not have signed on to some global shared taxi app that did things like app based ordering/mapping/single payment portal/language translation/precalculation of fees, but they just kinda didn't. You can fly all around the world and uber works the same no matter what, but you go one city over and ordering a taxi using a cell phone changes all around if there is even is an app. I don't think uber or lyft would have even gotten off the ground if taxi companies had been onboard early on having a modern phone app that came close to the uber of lyft ones.

There's also the fact that taxis don't often search for fares in areas where POC live (Bronx, deep Brooklyn, Dorchester, etc.) so even if the drivers aren't racist you're at an inherent disadvantage compared to an app where you can summon the car to your doorstep.
