Of everyone, Bronco routinely makes me the maddest. This is literally the stupidest take. A doomsday scenario is happening to the doomsayer, and we're expected to think they're crazy. If AOC was a woolly mammoth in this comic we would chuckle because we all inevitably knew that would happen. There is no reference to global warming in this comic. It's just a person holding a sign saying the world is going to end, and then freezing to death, while a newspaper reports how strange the current climate is. It doesn't help that the background is just an empty snowy tundra. At least Payne was smart enough to include people treating it like just another day. If I didn't know who these stupid cartoonists are, I would think the point of these is to say that it's clearly not going to take 12 years for the world to end. But unfortunately I do know these cartoonists so I know they definitely don't think that a situation where it's colder in Chicago than it is on Antarctica is a doomsday situation.

It’s hard to make a man understand something when his paycheck depends on not understanding it. I do wonder about the psychology, though, of people like the Exxon scientists who knew climate change was real and yet deliberately sowed doubt about it. Like, even if you’re a complete psychopath, shouldn’t self-interest alone make you want to stop destroying the ecosystem? Is it a death bet- “I’ll be dead before the consequences kick in, so who cares?”

Do you guys bother to read moon-landing conspiracies? Do you ever pay attention to people ranting about how lizardmen run the world? Of course not, because those are stupid and ridiculous nonsense. These people look at climate change the same way. All of them are old enough that, at one point, climate change wasn't taken seriously at all. They internalized it as a joke which they don't need to pay attention too. And no matter how much the science develops and the impact becomes more clear, they will not reevaluate that stance. Climate change is scary and its easier to continue treating it like a joke while staying in their safety bubble. These are the same people that when presented with a lightbulb that is cheaper and more-efficient, they throw a fit because it looks different. Change scares them, and change pushed by !!BIG GOVERNMENT!! scares them even more. Companies are loving stupid when it comes to anything that doesn't impact the short-term bottom line in a positive way. You give them a way to make a quick buck that will gently caress them over a few years down the line, they take the money everytime. A lot of environmentalism is beneficial to both consumer and producers because it creates businesses that are sustainable over the longterm without ravaging the planet. But people are short-sighted and almost always opt for what will make them the most money NOW rather than what will make them more money overtime. Its the reason why government regulations need to exist and the free market can never be trusted to do it properly. People will ignore obvious problems in favor of making money, and while the "free market" will eventually cause these short-sighted businesses to collapse its only after they gently caress up everything around them. To add to this, our economy is so hosed up because the top echelon of investors and institutions figured out it was much more efficient to generate a ton of capital driving a business into the ground over a few quarters and moving onto another one than it was too build up one business that will generate a good amount of capital over time. Businesses are treated disposable and their resources exploitable. It is becoming more and more something akin to economic colonialism.

I think you guys are overthinking it and most climate denialism is just straight up tribalism right now. These people have spent decades at least denying climate change and admitting they were incorrect now means admitting that they were wrong for decades about a serious problem and actively made it worse. My face burns when the wind blows. It's hard to breathe, my lungs burning from the cold or the thin air or both. My fingers go numb as they rub my eyes free of the gathering frost. I had to abandon the snow mobile this morning, and I haven't felt my legs for a few hours. I keep moving through the night, not wanting to stand still for fear I would freeze completely. My body feels...almost hot, now. I know it's a bad sign. I'm so close to home, so close, but my legs have given out. The snow keeps coming. Will I be buried completely? Will they ever find me? Will they even look? I've managed to turn myself onto my back. I look up at the clouds, up at the grey, and I laugh to myself. "So much for global warming..." -Payne's Final Moments
