Video of a Tu-22M bomber crash last week has been released https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8veRu_1I_c&t=61s three crew members died, the fourth one is in critical condition. The bomber was not loaded as it was on a training flight. Also, two Su-34 fighters crashed in mid-air in the Far East, killing three pilots and leaving one survivor. No video of that afaik so imagine this is two Sukhois:

The torrent of info was started by transcript of recorded conversations between Jarosław Kaczyński (head of majority party and facto ruler of Poland) and a businessman, where Kaczyński does a shady real estate deal. It deserves a separate writeup from someone better than me, but the operation is Kremlin level of malversation.

Here’s the write up as tl;dr as I can make it. Kaczynski has ties to a foundation established after his brother died in the Smolensk catastrophe. This foundation owns a company (Srebrna) which in turns owns quite a bit of lucrative real estate in Warsaw. Both of the organizations are staffed with PiS people as you might imagine. Srebrna has all this real estate because of totally legal and not shady split of public wealth between political parties done after the collapse of communism. Naturally when you have land and real estate in city center you want to make money. So Srebrna rents some buildings and wants to build even bigger buildings, namely two gently caress off towers (twin towers anyone? Kaczynski TWINS?? GET IT!?). They would be located on a plot of land formerly occupied by a building entered into a registry of historical buildings. Demolishing such a building is quite illegal and there are two ways to deal with this. Brute force way is to “oops it was consumed by an accidental, I repeat accidental fire” method, which is by the way employed by some companies in Warsaw. Nice way is to have your guy in a decision body where rulings on whether to cross a building out of the registry are made. Srebrna, being the known property of LAW AND JUSTICE party, chose the second way. So the eyesore is no more, what next? Well, to build the towers there’s quite a bit of legwork to be done by lawyers, the developer, etc. To that effect, Srebrna has established a front company to deal with this side of business. All of that so that the media wouldn’t catch that quickly to the fact that poor man Kaczynski is a big developer bozo. This front company dealt with lawyers and one Austrian businessman who by the way has family ties to Kaczynski. Now this dude and the lawyers have for 1,5 years been doing the stuff one does to prepare for actual construction work. However, he did it basically for free, paying out of his own pocket, on the assumption that Srebrna would pay him after the construction permit is issued. No contract has been signed to that effect, because Kaczynski is a LAWFUL AND JUST man and after all they are family. Well then, the local elections are upon us and Kaczynski realized that with PO in power in Warsaw they won’t get the permit because PO hates PiS (questionable but possible). The PiS candidate for city mayor is a laughable shmuck and by the way, another candidate (not party affiliated), representing people of Warsaw starts to reveal the Srebrna business dealings during his campaign. So Kaczynski, Austrian businessman and some other guy have a meetup which is recorded by the Austrian because he knows that something's up. Kaczynski unknowingly goes on record, saying that he’s sorry but there is no way they can pay for all the work that the Austrian has done because there is no legal reason for them to do so without seeming suspicious. After all, the money were to exchange hands only after the permit was acquired. BUT he devised a devilish plan to get the Austrian his money in another way, that is, the Austrian is to sue the Foundation threatening legal action if not paid for whatever fictional reason and the institute will fold like a house of cards, not even go to court with the Austrian, instead they will settle the matter out of court (the deal will be secret so that no one knows the real amount of money transferred and for what it was) and the Austrian will drop charges. The Austrian refused this approach and instead dropped the tape to journalists. In the background of this is from where the actual money to pay for all of this would come. The front company would get a loan from Srebrna and at the same time take a mortgage from a bank under PiS control. The loan from Srebrna would then be repaid with money from the mortgage. And the way you organize all of this is one quick conversation with CEO of the bank. This is all real, this is on tape. The cherry on top is that PiS actively pursues all suspected shady real estate dealings of their arch enemies PO and has built quite a political capital on this over the last years. Hooray no one cares especially not PiS MPs and electorate. The official party line is that Kaczynski is a genius strategic mind and a savvy businessman to boot, oh and by the way, he didn't use one curse word during the whole recording. Kaczynski’s recorded refusal to pay for uncontracted services rendered, along with his suggestion to the Austrian businessman to sue the foundation to justify payments, and PiS politicians’ comments that this is all amazingly honest, led to a running meme where people tell a story how they went to a place of business or a store, got something from there but refused to pay, telling the proprietor to sue them and how everyone else then stood up and clapped and admired them for their honesty.

It's also worth noting that one particular candidate in Warsaw mayoral elections already latched into Srebrna and its shady transactions. Kaczynski namedrops him on the tape as one of the main reasons they have to put off the investment. He's not the candidate from the largest opposition party who won the elections, but from a minor electoral committee created by several left-wing parties (which got paltry 3%). During the campaign, the liberal media called him "the PiS-sponsored hitman" for attacking also their candidate and called everyone to vote for PO candidate to let him win in the first turn. It's hard to overstate how much influence the media have on Polish politics and how much more lovely they make it.

Left one more thing. This whole thing wouldn't even be a thing if not for the fact that Srebrna wanted to build really big skyscrapers and not just any reasonable building. The zoning for this plot of land limits the height of possible construction there to half the projected height of the towers. So what Srebrna needed was a permit which specifically amended the zoning. And this, they were afraid, was something that PO ruled city hall would not give them. But that's like an asterisk to an asterisk of this story.

I actually think this thing is distracting from the ex-minister of defence Macierewicz’s lackeys being arrested over corruption and the actual chance that PO is going to capitalize on it is kinda weak. The zoning back and forth is a normal thing in downtown Warsaw, for better or for worse, and the answer to the question if Kaczynski can do business as an active politician, either through a foundation or a company or whatever else, is legally ambiguous. The shittiest thing for me here is the assumption that one of the leading banks (which, I think, is co-owned by the state?) is basically guaranteed to give a loan through implied political pressure.

It’s pretty crazy Mariott and Elektrim we’re already penned in pretty much where they ended up being built ~20 years later, albeit in a different form. Also, I remember early 90’s Pasaz Wiecha and it was more Blade Runner than Blade Runner, but maybe in a different way these sketches show.

The prevailing opinion is that the arrests were actually meant to preemptively distract from the Srebrna story and the "Nisiolowski paid in prostitutes" breaking news (apparently known since 2015, published now) is the continuation of that. Anyway, for me the major takeaway is really the proposal Kaczynski forwarded about the whole "you should sue us so that we may pay you" which is in essence advocating for manufacturing falsehoods to match with the desired outcome and tricking the court into believing them.
