A batman video game used one of the images of the dead guy and then had to issue an apology because they didn't know it was real.

that's almost a defensible mistake because the circumstances led to it being photographed so well that it really does look like it had to come from a movie/publicity still

Seems like most cyberpunk/near future stories neglect the fact that our society takes whatever's remotely cool or popular and just loving grinds it into the ground and then forces it down your throat until there's nothing cool or fun it's all just pop culture crap that ends up being foist upon us as cool or fun. And it's instant now. It took corporate America a couple of decades to appropriate the 70s/80s punk movement but now stuff like that is almost immediately appropriated and watered down and ruined.

I suppose the Feds/American government was the most boring faction of Snow Crash so yeah we're all on our way to living like that.

this part was basically 100% correct!!!

quote:

Y.T.'s mom pulls up the new memo, checks the time, and starts reading it. The estimated reading time is 15.62 minutes. Later, when Marietta does her end-of-day statistical roundup, sitting in her private office at 9:00 P.M., she will see the name of each employee and next to it, the amount of time spent reading this memo, and her reaction, based on the time spent, will go something like this:

Less than 10 mm. Time for an employee conference and possible attitude counseling.
10-14 min. Keep an eye on this employee; may be developing slipshod attittide.
14-15.61 mm. Employee is an efficient worker, may sometimes miss important details.
Exactly 15.62 mm. Smartass. Needs attitude counseling.
15.63-16 mm. Asswipe. Not to be trusted.
16-18 mm. Employee is a methodical worker, may sometimes get hung up on minor details.
More than 18 mm. Check the security videotape, see just what this employee was up to (e.g., possible unauthorized restroom break).

Insurance companies all do their damnedest to never pay out, they're all steadily working towards the point where they can force the insurance holder to default a minute before something happens that the insurance might have to pay for. Then it will be the perfect financial product.

It's amazing that all the terrible things about communism I was told have come true under capitalism.

"You'll have to share a car and apartment with strangers"
Me and my 3 roommates rent an apartment from someone who can kick us out for any reason. I "own" a car that can be repossessed if I miss a payment but I spend all day driving strangers around in it for less than minimum wage.

"The government has spies watching your every move"
The four private companies that own the internet spy on everything I do and sell that information to every government and corporation.

"You'll have to wait in long lines to get substandard healthcare. The government decides what healthcare you get"
I'm legally required to buy insurance that I can't afford to use. The insurance company also spies on me in order to determine if I do anything unhealthy. The only doctors that take my insurance don't have openings for six months

"You'll have to wait in breadlines to get the bare minimum you need"
There's no actual grocery store near me. I buy my food from a dollar store where half the things are expired. Even at the grocery store I can't afford food that isn't full of sugar. I mostly live off of ramen and peanut butter. Not only do I have to stand in line but when it's my turn I then have to pay.

Volvo has installed an environmentally friendly seawall along the coast of Sydney's harbour that aims to improve biodiversity and water quality in the area.

The Volvo Living Seawall consists of 50 hexagonal tiles with small corners and recesses that are designed to imitate the root structure of native mangrove trees – a popular habitat for marine wildlife.

"The government controls what job you have"
If I don't go to college the only jobs available are service jobs that pay around minimum wage. There may be a few unions around that can possibly find me difficult job that's pays slightly better.

If I go to college I'll have to borrow tens of thousands of dollars. I can major in anything I want but few of these fields offer job security. I need to predict what field will become profitable years ahead of time.

"The government controls where you live"
Moving requires thousands of dollars and a pre-existing job in the area. Many jobs won't hire you if you don't already live in the area. I depend on friends and family for support and I won't have them if I move.

"The government controls how many children you have"
Giving birth alone costs thousands of dollars. Children require huge amounts of time and money which my partner and I can't provide because of our jobs. Society tells me to wait until I can provide for the child before having it. This will never be possible so I'll never be able to have children "the right way".

"The government has secret brutal police forces"
If my skin is the wrong color the police can murder me out right. This will be vocally defended by one of the two political parties. If I speak out about this the police will openly harass and threaten me. The federal police will label me a "black identity extremist". The immigration police can detain me, separate me from my children, and require I pay them ransom to get my children back. Even if I have all my paperwork they can declare it fake with no evidence.

At least that's not particularly difficult. Basically anything in a University's Engineering Dept. will always have a job market, plus anything that popular news says "HIGH DEMAND FOR X" at the start of your sophomore year will still have a job market three years later.

I got an engineering degree and worked in various “research assistant “ positions and outside of academics no one would hire me for anything better paying thAn lab tech jobs where I still had to get certified and do practical hours and I could’ve gotten a 6 month community college degree instead of spending 5 years in college. I spend every day regretting it and often contemplate just ending it all because after 10 years I still can’t make over 20k lmao

This one I'm a little skeptical of. I would think a hiring manager would look favorable for someone willing to uproot their entire life and move however many miles to serve [INSERT CORPORATION HERE], some even kick in for moving expenses.
I mean that's a lot of power to have over an employee, the job being the only thing keeping them from homelessness in a strange city.

Obviously this does not apply to low-wage jobs where they see humans as completely disposable, instead of just mostly disposable.
