I'll prob play it, I grew up playing MK along with whatever other FG I could get my hands on and the usual NRS crybaby poo poo doesn't really bother me when I'm just playing it to be a funhaver anyway.

I've actually been enjoying watching Smash Ultimate quite a bit (I can't play it at all because No Switch). I couldn't tell you why tho, maybe it's because I finally understand what's happening? I like playing around with MK games, they're gimmicky enough that you can always find a character that does The Thing You Wanna Do, even if that thing isn't great.

On balance I've probably had more fun in the first 1-2 months of every NRS game I've played than any other fighting game ever.

Just some quick questions. I haven't played fighting games since I was a kid and I just picked up tekken 7 which I'm really enjoying. My question is about sticks and pads though. I did some googling and it seems the consensus that sticks=pads as far as what is better. I would've assumed at a minimum pads would have an edge over say the ps4 controller because of the larger more sensitive buttons. I could see how a fighting game specific pad could be on par with stick but just by using my xbox pad I know for a fact a hori commander or whatever would be a way better experience. Anyways, it's a shame cause I think sticks are really cool but I cant justify spending that money on one especially if I don't end up sticking with playing these games (I am debating getting a commander though). My other question is- Square gates seem to be the standard (I know the reasons) but is there any reason to use one these days now that the things are so moddable? An Octagon gate seems to be obviously superior and possibly a circle one as well.

The best controller is the one you practice most with Octogates do not have equal percentage of the circle for all 8 directions so hitting diagonals is harder

For what it's worth, Tekken in particular has a pretty big percentage of (really good) players who play on pad.

I like my Hori FC but I actually prefer using the PS3 controller for Tekken and NRS games. At the end of the day you gotta use whatever you're most comfortable with, and if you don't feel hindered by your current input device, there's no reason to change it up. I got myself a 6-button pad because plinking was a pain on a standard controller, for example. It also feels more natural to play six-button fighters on that kind of layout.

I don't know about the XB1, but the 360 had a notoriously lovely d-pad. If the XB1 d-pad is anything like it, you want to get as far away from it as possible. That said, using a pad is generally slightly advantageous to a stick in Tekken, due to how much easier backdash cancels are. e: also that diagram from slagcoin about why octo and circle gates are bad really needs to be pinned to every page of this thread inthesto fucked around with this message at 22:40 on Feb 8, 2019 |

Seltzer posted:I would've assumed at a minimum pads would have an edge over say the ps4 controller because of the larger more sensitive buttons. Minor note here, but when people say "pad" they don't usually mean the ones marketed as "fight pads" in particular; they just mean more generally any control pad as opposed to a stick. With that being said, Playstation pads have historically been one of the better options for pad players and are what a lot of the non-stick Tekken heads used. Xbox controllers were always terrible for FGs.

So all of korea using circles is just familiarity not different preference? But yea the buttons on the xbone arent great for hitting two at once imo and the pad isn't great and a bit small.
