Pirate Radar posted:What do they discuss? I could listen to it later. Berke Negri posted:i did not listen to the podcast though but at least for melting pot the goal is assimilation towards a sort of (white coded) American identity the kind of classical example of this being liberal favorite teddy roosevelts bit on it quote:“In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person’s becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American … There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag … We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language … and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.” so the problems with this is obviously assimilation as a goal but the unsaid thing is that it is also a trap because no immigrant will ever fully satisfy the conditions because they will be ever shifting (there is no "American values" codified anywhere but in the eye of the beholder which is usually white and even for whites this can be stripped in different ways when needed) no clue what the podcast talks about but that's pretty 101 above so I'm guessing it's more modern inclusionary language while not transparently assimilationists like above can still echo the same sentiments (we want SKILLED immigrants that can contribute to America, etc)

I might listen tonight to see what it’s like.

“The United States is a nation of immigrants.” It’s a phrase we hear constantly – often said with the best of intentions and, in today’s increasingly cruel environment, meant as a strong rebuke of Donald Trump and his white nationalist administration. The metaphor of the “melting pot” serves a similar purpose: the United States is strong and noble because we are a place that takes people in from across the globe, an inclusive, welcoming, compassionate in-gathering of humanity - e pluribus unum - "out of many, one." It’s a romantic idea – and often evoked as a counter to xenophobic, anti-immigrant rhetoric. But how historically accurate are these phrases and the national narratives they entrench? And what if, instead of combating white nationalism, they subtly promote it? On this episode, we dissect the notion that the United States is simply a rainbow collection of disparate groups coming together and breakdown how, in many ways, this absolves us of our past and present as a violent, white-settler colony. Our guest is historian Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz.

the whole system is only racist in it's construction so there's a lot to mine the first real hard immigration legislation is from 1882 and called the Chinese Exclusion Act so like there were some stipulations on who could become a citizen from other countries before then but actually codifying who can come in and be kicked out it really starts there Berke Negri fucked around with this message at 11:16 on Feb 2, 2019 |

lol turns out it's white supremacy to say we're a nation of immigrants to promote immigration in tyool 2019 when the overwhelming immigration issue in the us pertains to mexicans seeking a better life. i swear if some people didn't have their seething hatred of liberals to cling to, they'd have nothing at all
