I think he was originally a Marvel UK character. He got Frank's approval to wear the skull and everything!

Go read Contest of Champions, it's got him at his best.

No he wasn't originally a Marvel UK character. I believe is first appearance was in the Punisher: Suicide Run*

I dug his appearance in Contest of Champions where he goes from "I want to be the Punisher" to "being the Punisher is horrible. The tabloids want me to kill everyone."

*= What's that you ask? It was the Punisher story that was literally the Punisher version of "Death of Superman, Funeral for a Friend and the Return of Superman" all rolled into one.

Actually, he was already at the "being the Punisher is horrible. The tabloids want me to kill everyone." stage at the outset of Contest of Champions, we just found out his reasoning later.

Still wish Ewing had the chance to do the Champions series he was clearly angling to do.

He's originally from a 1992 storyline by Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning, who I believe were mostly Marvel UK guys prior to Punisher. It's about the Punisher going to Europe and punishing various people-- including Batroc and a guy with a chaingun for an arm, so there's that. I only really read it because I was intrigued by Nigel's characterization in Contest of Champions but frankly in this first appearance his role is just to be a reckless and naive Frank Castle fan. He does show up later in Suicide Run but yeah, in his first appearance (which is sort of spiritually Marvel UK...ish?) he's a little overshadowed by Batroc and Scorpion and a new lovely Matador and Kingpin and this and that and etc., it's a pretty wild B-movie romp actually that kinds of earns its overstuffed proportions.

Honestly, looking at that original story, I feel like how he turns out in Contest of Champions actually makes a lot of sense. It's like what happened with Rachel in Rucka's Punisher run - people who go through similar tragedies to Frank's might come to idolise or emulate him, but Frank is the only person to be able to keep doing what he does.

I'm sure it was better than when Deadpool did the same. Though the funeral issue was very good for the most part.

Didn't that story have some really weird effort to retcon part of Kelly's origin for Deadpool.

Something like Deadpool saying "oh, T-Ray didn't remember this thing. I guess he was lying when he said he was the original Wade Wilson."

I just remember it was some really strange last second retcon being made by a writer on his way off a book.
