I saw Sicario 2 tonight and actually, it's really good! Remember how we all thought the writer must have completely sold out and this was going to be right-wing tortureporn or whatever? Actually the real villain is Donald Trump. I'm not joking, the first hour is him 'letting loose' Graver and Alejandro, then Trump totally chickens out and they have to eat each other to cover their asses. That screenwriter is more sly than I thought.

brawleh posted:

Still gathering my thoughts on it, but yeah Sicario 2 was pretty dope.

In its repetitions of Villeneuves movie and establishing an escalation of the conflict, you get an abridged hyperreal interpretation of Act of Valor - with a few dabs of Zero Dark Thirty. Though the "you wanted Afghanistan" scene more or less unravels things, the impeach line was far too cute. Trump is the “real” villain insofar as he’s the implied POTUS and by extension here the secretary of defence and so on handing out a blank check - with the stated goal to expand the definitions of a forever war.

Snowman_McK posted:

The film depicts their plan as failing only because their spineless boss lost his nerve.

It's exactly the film the first one is mocking.

Slim Jim Pickens posted:

The plan in Sicario was to murder a bunch of people and hope that causes more people to get murdered, so they could murder some guy who was sort-of related to a homegrown suicide bomber cel.

Great movie with good messages. It says that America is retarded and incapable of creating any change besides destabilization and violence. People who think its a glorification of Special Operatives and their mission are actually just retarded too

Snowman_McK posted:

It also specifically describes that destabilisation and violence as 'working'

Right up until the bosses lose their nerve. Calling it subversive or critical is assuming a level of awareness and irony not really present in the text itself.

Slim Jim Pickens posted:

Lol the secretary of defence says " terrorism has a new definitiom: any political group which uses violence to achieve its objectives" and then asks some spec ops to kidnap a child and murder some people in order to start a cartel war.

Yeah bro it probably worked, to create violence that wasnt solving any general problem. Josh Brolin even knows, the cartels are just making business and arent going to be scared off by some extra violence. Hes just a violent goon who isnt capable of anything else. Check how was going to execute the teenage girl but has a change of heart and "saves" her by murdering 10 guys and leaving her shellshocked and nonresponsive.

You need a voicepoint character to ineffectually tut-tut the CIA spooks or something?
Looking back on Sicario 2 and the initial reception is going to be especially weird now that it turns out Trump thinks it's a documentary

Polar is a film that, on paper, probably sounded great. Even in the filming, it all would have seemed bold and interesting.

The film's issues all come out in the final execution. The editing is janky as gently caress, and is just off pace the whole film. I got about halfway through, and every scene just felt off rhythm, every shot a little too long or short. I don't know how else to describe it.

Making a film is really loving hard. I might be wrong, but I think most of the disappointing Netflix projects have been by directors that aren't used to projects that big.

It's baffling how anyone, even someone new to movie making, could look at the opening scene of Polar and go 'yeah, this is how it should be'. No Mads, ugly colors, a bunch of Suicide Squad rejects who are inept as hell, bad CGI blood and general incoherence (down to the dumb title font) that make you think you selected another movie named Polar.

A lot of the shittier "Netflix Originals" aren't actually comissioned or funded at the production level by Netflix. They're picked up on the cheap because they can't get distribution rights elsewhere and in the past would have be Straight-to-Video.

Yep that's the same movie.

Here's a question, any good French and Indian action movies to recommend? I ask since those are two countries that have a ton of movies, and I haven't watched many action films from them. Alluda Mazaaka is one good Indian (Tollywood) one I like, outrageous craziness. But not in a way that looks kind of boring like that CGI Matrix guy one, something about a 90s movie like that just feels less slick and safe, it's like Commando meets a Stephen Chow movie or something. It's the movie with that horse sliding under a car, fun flick.

For France, I have not seen much action from there outside of Luc Besson and Pierre Morel's movies.

Would Killing Zoe count as a French film? It's mostly in English and stars Eric Stoltz, but takes place in Paris and many of the characters speak French when not conversing with Stoltz's character.

I remember liking Banlieue 13 back when it first came out too, but I never saw the sequel.

That one is by Morel, yep I've seen those. Always taking Stoltz recommendations.

Also I'll add Italy to this request, any notable action movies from say the 80s and 90s on? I've seen a lot of the westerns and Euro-crime subgenre movies, but outside of Blastfighter I haven't seen any just action movie type of films there, especially in those decades. Wonder if I'm missing some gems.

Since we're discussing Italian films, there was one I saw advertised on Youtube a few years back, and it seemed to involve...angels or something, on earth. It was cartoonishly and horrifically violent, and that seemed to be the thrust of the advertising, showing people getting their heads punched off and so on.

Anyone have any idea what film I might be referring to? I know that's impossibly vague and i apologise.

Now that I think about it, I'm not even 100% sure it's Italian.

That's not super vague at all. I can at least tell you 100% that you're thinking of something by Necrostorm, and from that description it sounds like Adam Chaplin in particular.

Not everything they make is a hit, but I loving love them regardless, because there's very few indie studios with the kind of sheer chutzpah they have.
