That’s a decent enough idea I think. A negativistic forums culture that's quick to criticise and slow to praise its members would surely produce some great content oh wait that kind of sounds like SA, I'm guessing most people would rather go get cheap validation from other dumbasses on reddit than put up with that.

There is no way to fix Reddit (removing karma entirely, upheaving the mod system) that doesn't incite a mass exodus to the next site that promises instant validation and a modicum of power for people who spend 12 hours a day on the site to moderate

"Fixing" reddit would involve—or even be synonymous with—a mass exodus of redditors. I prefer SA but I've come to regard reddit as the wretched hive of scum and villainy I sometimes visit for various reasons.

Digg was more like the CNN homepage with an upvote system than a straight easy-bake forums platform, and IIRC it went down doing the exact same poo poo Reddit's doing now with promoted content and obvious shill mods hijacking the curation system.

i don't think anyone is like, consciously there for the upvotes or going to flounce if they disable them, but all the karma whoring stuff is a big part of the gamification that keeps people coming back day after day even though nobody there likes each other and everyone's an idiot. It's the same basic thing every other successful social platform uses, cause it works to keep people coming back posting pictures of their tits for the precious validation of three button-clicks from anonymous strangers.

What I find funny about reddit is how perfectly it demonstrates the inevitable conclusion of the libertarian/ancap political ideology redditors purportedly love so much—it’s exactly what you get with no moderation/regulation and no one likes it but they can’t make the connection between cause and effect. SA, with its paywall and strongly enforced moderation, is arguably a more “free” platform that the average redditor says they want but can’t bring themselves to accept is only possible under a structure that their entire identity is predicated in hating.

To a point. We have baked in prejudices of our own, as well as gradually changing standards.

For example, if a poster here tried to make a thread about how child porn might actually be a social good he'd be universally shut down. Every poster would condemn him and he'd be lucky if he just ate a probation instead of a ban. If not banned he'd be redtexted forever. Even a "well what if it is just simulated child porn and no actual children are hurt" would a firm NO. If you're at the stage in development where making a provocative argument just to see what happens (ie trolling) seems fun, child abuse is a landmine in SA that you may not see coming.

Likewise we have standards that have changed over time. If a rockstar poster from 2003 was caught in a time warp and accidentally posting to SA2019 he'd probably be banned with a quickness for all the ironic racisim, homophobia, and transphobia, because sometime in the last 15 years we've realized that being ironically lovely is still lovely. Even the EVE goons had a cultural revolution a few years ago and toned it down. Haha, remember that time SA crowdfunded degrading scat porn? Yeah, that probably wouldn't fly today.

To an internet libertarian having some discussion topics off limits is intolerable.

i, too, have been thinking a lot about making a reddit-like social media platform that exports the best parts of SA and explicitly markets itself as not being a "free speech" platform. i have the technical skills but none of the other skills needed to do such a thing.

we should really do it though the world needs this and now is the time. dont think anyone wanted an 'anti-free-speech' platform in the 2010s but we're clamoring for it now.

Virtually every thread discussing how a forum "should" operate always ends up at these same discussions about what makes a forum good, and we keep coming back to "well, whatever SA does." Of course none of us can speak truly authoritatively about what is good about SA since we all pretty much grew up with it, whether we were members since inception or not, so we're all biased toward it, but I think it is saying something that virtually everyone we've chased out of here has gone on to poo poo up some other part of the internet. In my personal brain poisoned internet narrative, SA is sort of like the locus of internet culture, and whether it actually "created" anything is questionable outside of a few definitive phenomena like impact font memes that can be positively traced back here. Everything seems to pass through here at some point.

SA is honestly the internet to me. Reddit through an ad-free client is for super niche stuff, porn (which is sadly constantly driven to the same boring conventional beauty crap due to upvote culture), and laughing at bad opinions. Facebook and similar sites are poison to be avoided, and just about the only other site I regularly visit is slickdeals

I know people say this all the time but I genuinely don't know what I would do without SA. Reddit and Facebook are actively revolting to use. I actually stopped using Facebook at all and it very suddenly alleviated a lot of depressive symptoms I was experiencing - my life actually got better as a result. That's not even an exaggeration. Even when I occasionally pop on to FB once a month or so I can feel the weird oppressive aura of it and immediately get off.

The weirdest thing is that people on my friends list I see in person ask me constantly if I saw something they posted, even my own mother, who knows I don't use the service. I haven't posted a single word since 2017, but people don't even seem to conceive that I just don't look at it. I don't know if that means I'm also a white noise Facebook poster and nobody notices my absence or if it's just such a firehose of bullshit that you couldn't notice someone simply vanishing from your front page.
