...nnnnnaaaah. I didn't like Obama's foreign policy either, but Trump literally just said a couple days ago that he wants to put troops back in Iraq so he can "keep an eye on" Iran.

Iraq, wisely, said "gently caress no."

This thread is usually a pretty good and informative read. Other times, like tonight, it just seems like many people here need to take a Prozac and get a grip. I'm struggling to think of a single time when Dipshit has been able to coast on 'good' coverage for more than maybe a day or two before something inevitably happened that made his good press coverage vanish.

He's coming from a major loss with the shutdown, and if the analysis of an emergency declaration is accurate, that's not going to magically make the wall get built. People need to relax.

Watching a bunch of sycophants play politics as usual while a guy whose brain is dripping out his ears plays president is depressing as gently caress and having to come in here and be called dumb by people who think that's just how things have to be is frustrating as hell. I want people in Congress who will fight for me so that I don't have to go on kidney dialysis within the next five years, not play the same loving games of grab rear end that have resulted in an overall slide to the right for the past 40 or 50 years.

This thread always goes to hell on "big" political nights. Its when the biggest, most worked up people gather together to get worked up by the most empty of rhetoric and most superficial of red meat. Its all the SOTU is. A giant showcase for the President to rally his base. In theory he's reaching out to the rest but in reality everyone who hates him is just there to be riled up.

Sane people don't watch the SOTU.

I never claimed I was sane.

But sane people - even the politically engaged - don't stay up all night watching the SOTU, or watching primary votes roll in, or watching senators debate a bill, or all the other crazy poo poo we do. It ain't healthy and it doesn't actually accomplish anything that couldn't be accomplished in a much more rational half hour manner tomorrow morning.

I know everyone is onboard with AOC and the other freshman Rep ladies who are kicking rear end up and down DC but is anyone else pleasantly surprised by how good Ro Khanna has been? He's been an exceptionally pro Twitter follow and his messaging is extremely on point. I think the only thing I knew of him is that he was extremely Silicon Valley which makes his messaging and sponsored bills that much more exciting/surprising. Definitely also someone to watch.

Yeah. The thing that gets missed is that young people are energized because we're in a moment right now where everything seems lovely, but it also feels like real change is in the air. That energy isn't going to last for years or decades if nothing actually changes. This idea that Democrats can't possibly lose young voters or people of color is exceptionally dangerous and shortsighted.

quote:

“Strange memories on this nervous night in Las Vegas. Five years later? Six? It seems like a lifetime, or at least a Main Era—the kind of peak that never comes again. San Francisco in the middle sixties was a very special time and place to be a part of. Maybe it meant something. Maybe not, in the long run . . . but no explanation, no mix of words or music or memories can touch that sense of knowing that you were there and alive in that corner of time and the world. Whatever it meant. . . .

History is hard to know, because of all the hired bullshit, but even without being sure of “history” it seems entirely reasonable to think that every now and then the energy of a whole generation comes to a head in a long fine flash, for reasons that nobody really understands at the time—and which never explain, in retrospect, what actually happened.

There was madness in any direction, at any hour. If not across the Bay, then up the Golden Gate or down 101 to Los Altos or La Honda. . . . You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning. . . .

And that, I think, was the handle—that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn’t need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting—on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. . . .

So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark—that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.

The impression I sometimes get is that Trump brought a lot of people with strong opinions on specific wedge issues into U.S Politics who perhaps didn't really follow it all that closely before. People tend to break really hard for or against him with very strong sentiment either way, but as I keep saying it often feels like something gets lost in-between on how the daily ins and outs all get un-packaged. Often I just feel on a completely different wave length than many on what the pertinent matter of the day is with regard to U.S Politics and News.

I guess one common example is the whole :decorum: thing. The way I see it Democratic government tends to run better (or perhaps less worse in the case of modern congress) when there's at least some attempt to not have everything devolve into an us vs. them moment where it doesn't serve a particular purpose. Many seem to see it a sign of weakness or capitulation, but I've rarely found it to be the case. It's like just....parliamentary poo poo.

From the sounds of the news and more direct analysis the speech was rather unremarkable by Trump standards. Perhaps that's the best anyone could have hoped for.
