It's a fair point.

Personally I've been trying to start or lead discussions in the workplace and elsewhere. There's a lot of wrong information out there and its difficult to constantly having to pull sourced facts and argue why those are more robust/trustworthy compared to Facebook poster #1 or engineer dude who keeps parroting that cars are the main GHG emitters.

Admittedly climate change is not my field of study so I always feel on shaky grounds debating topics outside my areas of expertise.

I wish someone would make quick reference cards on important data.

I gather that the NDP used to talk a lot about the destruction of farmland and its replacement by subdivisions back in the 1980s. It feels like one of those issues that would be due for a comeback right now if not for the cult of home ownership being stronger than ever.

we've always had a pretty strong interest from the NDP from the 70s until now -- they'll actually send out sitting MPs to talk to activists and farmers and get a sense of the (fairly local) issue, but one of things that's more powerful than farmers in this country are developers.

the other two parties have, over the years, traded places over how farmland should be developed with respect to airports. Harper returned most of the landed expropriated for Mirabel in 2006; Jim Flaherty announced the Pickering Airport (again) in 2012. Local Liberal MPs are pretty much in favour of not building an airport, yet despite being in power with a majority government nothing's been done to protect farmland. Ultimately it comes down to some public projects being stuck in the gears of bureaucracy to the point where entire generations of bureaucrats have worked on files like the Pickering Airport their entire career without anything actually happening.

I'm glad the NDP didn't put Ashton in charge, her pathetic embarrassing failure to portray her technically superior platform as anything more than the rambling of a rich white academic with no real life experience about the issues she's talking about would have done more damage in the long term than anything Jagmeet "Sikh Trudeau" Singh could have done.

As of right now I plan to vote Green federally for the first time, after more than a decade of support to the NDP. Its a far from ideal choice, but I feel like a message has to be sent.

The federal NDP doesn't deserve anyone's support. They're hardly better than the Liberals, so if you're a pt6a-style FYGM piece of poo poo then you can just vote Liberal and get all the "conservative government without the homophobia" you ever dreamed of, and if you're a good person you'd be better off voting green or spoiling your ballot.

Same. I hope they have competent local candidate for the federal election. My riding has been blue forever and ever, and the green candidates here have consistently been "your kindly environmentalist grandfather" types and end up with 0.5% of the vote, but I feel like a charismatic sustainable practices farmer - someone who can talk the whole "you know sustainability is actually good for the family farm" angle might be able to make it a real fight.

How do people stay engaged with environmental issues while avoiding burn out? For me, it comes from a sort of almost willful naïveté - I’m gonna keep on believing in the ability for both individuals and society to radically change and grow because otherwise I end up real nihilistic/misanthropic real quick.

I don't know, I honestly believe we've lost, too much damage has been done and we aren't willing to reverse it. Maybe there is a small chance to turn things around, but its not happening. At this point I personally feel like I have to push on and stay engaged as some sort of battle for the integrity of my soul, as well as that of our collective humanity. To surrender in the face of certain defeat and destruction would be some sort of ultimate cowardice.

Weird how the Nazis spent so many resources on internal policing and suppression when "almost everyone" was apparently totally fine with their government. If you didn't know any better you might think there was a lot of violent street fighting and political resistance to the Nazis that required them to resort to massive state terror to consolidate their hold on power.

it takes a big man to admit that given the right circumstances they would begrudgingly aid in the systematic extermination of an ethnic group, to pay their bills.
