Every losing Senate Democrat was blown out except lazy-rear end Nelson and Beto, going against incumbency advantage. Texas has more Republicans than Democrats and they have automatic straight-ticket voting with dozens of candidates on the ballot.

Anything she said relating to Israel that sounded like a criticism was going to draw fire since she is Palestinian and should learn her place according to the old guard and Israel I mean that's entirely a theoretical, but what we have in the here or now is just kind of a bad comment IMO. Try the old trick of switching out the name for another name closely associated with a specific religion and see how it comes across. Basically I agree with the position, the comment though feels like it's only opened her up to distraction tactics by the GOP and a divide with Democratic party leaders which doesn't help her position much at all. Fritz Coldcockin posted:The only people "riled up" are Republicans (who already hate her for being Muslim), the Democratic leadership (they're cowards), and Democrats who take money from AIPAC (cowards). She has nothing to apologize for and the only way "all about the Benjamins" is anti-Semitic is if you stand your head, wear x-ray specs, squint, and listen to Mozart. Read the thread for her twitter account, there's plenty of people that are clearly not Republican hack jobs that are wondering why that approach and are disappointed. It's also kind of pretty clear to me what was being implied by that comment and while it's not the most anti-semitic thing that someone could ever come out with for sure it goes above and beyond the kind of rhetoric that is necessary to advocate her point and has gotten her in trouble with party leadership. I don't necessarily think there needs to be an apology, but I don't see what that sort of approach accomplishes other than giving the Republican hacks ammunition to exploit divisions within the Democratic party and seize back some of the narrative in Washington. In way all in all if you want to be successful in your term in congress and have a chance at getting some of your legislative ideas picked up maybe it's not the best idea to earn the ire and condemnation of your party leaders quite so quickly into your first term. I mean it's good to come out swinging for your causes in terms of platform awareness, but from a sheer practical standpoint you also don't want to bite off more than you can chew if it eventually ends up getting in the way of your ultimate goals.

So the peanut gallery is either too dumb or too cynical to grip that, but either way America is straight up clowning itself more and more evry day I feel like Benjamin being a Jewish name was coincidental. She was talking about Pro-Israel lobbying and money in politics... a common theme among progressive democrats... hrm

It's clearly a reference to the song, possibly a reference to netanyahu, and not at all anti semitic either way unless you are predisposed to see anything a Muslim says as inherently anti-Semitic. The Dem leadership statement basically validated Republican anti-muslim racism.

Ilhan Omar doesn't need to apologize because people don't know perhaps the most famous line from a decades-old P. Diddy song. There are things you apologize for and things you don't. Ilhan Omar made a valid point about Israeli lobbying money in politics that was 100% spot-on and she doesn't need to apologize no matter who whines or feigns outrage about it. It occurs to me now that she was likely referring to Benjamin Franklin and money instead of the common Jewish name Benjamin which kind of changes the read of the tweet completely. Assuming that's the case yeah there's no anti-semitism whatsoever, the comment is fine and there's nothing to apologize for. Realistically all she needs to do in that scenario is just clarify that and be rid of the ambiguity and that's it, anyone that tries to push the issue further (probably Republicans) then gets cast in bad faith and essentially status quo.Fritz Coldcockin posted:Then those people are wrong and stupid.
