No, that's actually a reasonable consideration. I like having six to eight people per squad. Anything more and it just feels unwieldy, but less than that makes an outpost hard to build and administer. Be aware that you can have multiple squads, though, and reassign characters between them at will. I like having one just for animals, for example

I tend to have 6-10 in my primary squad, a number of people that depends entirely on my outpost size for garrison/labor, a dedicated squad for turrets, and then a squad for "pipeline" people which are training up on dummies or something.

I like to limit individual squads to where I can still access everyone with the number keys, even if i have more guys than that in total.

Despite my shaky standing with the Holy Nation and against all my better judgement thanks to the non-humans in my squad I’ve moved north to Okran’s Pride with plans to push up to the North Coast eventually because why not.

Now that I’m out of the drab brown of the Border Zone this game is pretty beautiful, in its own janky way.

What are people's opinion on the Heavy Samurai armor? It's got by far the best resistances, and the melee damage reduction isn't that big of a deal with heavy weapons that have a lot of damage to start with, but the -8 melee attack is a pain.

Wondering if it's better to go full samurai, but plate armor for the chestpiece.

I prefer light armor, on the whole. High levels of dodge can make you pretty hard to touch and if you ever do need to run, having no athletics malus is a good thing to have. Beak things are fast little bastards and homemade masterwork armor still gives you decent protection against most things you're actually likely to run into.

Worst case I slap on a belt of protection or martial arts and just really start tearing through poo poo.

Dodge is a pain to level though, and the difference between using heavy armor and light armor is really noticeable once you come up against tougher enemies.
For example, a masterwork Samurai Helmet gives 90% Cut resistance.

I'm currently doing a run without using stealth or crossbows, and after every fight (currently up against the Holy Nation), my light/medium armor troops are always way more beat up than the Heavy Armor units.

Yeah, but in practice, I barely ever do. The utility of having stealth, speed and carry weight available at all times outweighs that consideration for me, at least for everyday use.

I do usually try to keep a heavy duty set around for the edge cases, but wearing that stuff all the time would just be a bother.

The absolute best defense would probably be a sky high dexterity and melee defence. Though I do enjoy barely being scratched by harpoon shots atm.

Doesn't dodge only work when you're using martial arts, anyway? I'm using the plate coat I think it's called, the medium armor one while all my guys have stats in the 50s except for on my two ninjas and four archers who wear dustcoats. When their stats get up above 70 or so I may switch to something heavier.

Good medium armor is most of what you need but if you don't mind the micromanagement carry a set of heavy armor on the pack animal and switch it in on a guy with taunt if the fight looks like it could benefit from a guy with all his engagement slots filled up or would be trivialized if you funneled all the damage into one guy who is resisting it all.

I am lazy and so late game I just shove all of my scrub recruits into full heavy armour.

They get strong fast from carrying it, get tough fast from being hit over and over again and get better at hitting stuff fast because they are rolling at gigantic attack penalties. Yes, they are also completely useless for a bit, but once people have skilled up a character in specialist or masterwork grade samauri armour is just hilariously hard to bring down. Remember that 90% cut resistance means you take about 1/3 of the damage of 70% cut resistance, that goes a REALLY long way.

Dodge is primarily for martial arts defense, but if I remember right it also increases a characters chance of avoiding a hit when they're already staggered.

Man, the Shek are the laziest allies ever. Every patrol I ask to help me just goes "Sorry, duty calls, ask someone else". Taking Blister Hill on my own is a bit of a battle, since both the police station and the throne have turrets mounted on the roof, so you have to run through them to get at the turret guards.

Edit: The Phoenix is no pushover, that's for sure. Dude could hold off an army on his own. Pretty tricky without abusing crossbows or turrets.

There is definitely a lot of satisfaction to be had when enemies you had to rely on cheap tricks and kiting before to beat (dust bandits in the early game) you can now regularly chump without needing to do anything weird.

Also, your archers get fairly scary very quickly. When they're just starting out, they're absolutely laughable with their junkbows and land 1/6 shots at best on a dude crawling away. Now they're starting to reliably hit moving targets since their perception gains are crazy. I can only imagine how terrifying they are towards the end when they start blowing limbs off with single shots at incredible range.

Heavy weapons specialists fall into a similar category. At the beginning, Ruka wasn't much good for anything other than taking hits. Now she's wading in with medium/heavy armor, barely taking any damage, and knocking crowds silly with her plank. It's really opening up a lot of space for my light and fast melee people to deliver a ton of hits in the meantime, and my archers like the breathing room. Now I'm grabbing Shek wherever I can, giving them planks and good armor, and having them learn the hard way. Hunger be damned, too - my farm setup is good enough to have a surplus of dustwiches, so now I can staff up.

Farming really is the major reason to staff up, though. Farming a sufficient number of crops in a timely manner really does require a fair amount of labor, and that labor need never really decreases (especially compared to mining/processing, which you can tech up to be more efficient and require fewer people).

Farming becomes super easy once you unlock hydroponics. They continually harvest themselves, you only need to collect the result from their planters.

Btw, if you want to train toughness really fast, bring a group, including a medic or two, and some bedrolls, to the Shrieking forest. Hide your reserve members some distance away so they don't get in combat, and just engage one of the groups with your main training group until you're all downed, wait until you can stand up instead of playing dead, and just try doing that until all your guys are in recovery coma. Rescue them with your backup crew, rest up, and go at it again.

There are enough bandits around that every stand up attempt gives massive bonuses, and the shrieking bandits are nice enough to not steal anything, nor do they try to eat you.

Everything becomes super-easy once you tech up to it though? But I can see why you responded the way you did (given that I said staffing needs for farming never really decrease, when you pointed out that they do).

At least getting to higher-level stone mines and iron refiners is just books and tech level 3 (to get them down to one person). Hydroponics involves AI Cores and tech level 5 (which also requires a lot of ancient science books and engineering schematics on top of the core). I'm still at the early-game transitioning into mid-game, so it's regular-rear end farms and a boatload of farmers for me until we're buff enough to go exploring.

It affects some things more than others, I think. It's way easier to just buy awesome plate armor than to tech up to the point where you can make that's halfway decent, for example. Teching up is more about flexibility than power in my eyes.

Anyway, I just wanted to point out that there is a form of upgraded farming available after a point, if you choose to use it. No judgment.

Any 'hostile' action it seems. I had hired some to help me defend against Kral's Chosen and stripped one of gear when he went down. For whatever reason the mercs decided to stick around and patrol my town for free. Well "Soto" survived and patrols naked. I tried to knock him out to give him his gear back before the KC came back for round 2. The second group of tech hunters I hired somehow noticed from across the map and went hostile. I've only seen this with the tech hunters. Ninjas don't give a poo poo.

Anyone have tips for leveling martial arts? My weapon-using characters are having no issues and I can get some good skillups by spending time sparring with the heavily armored High Paladins that I've kidnapped. My martial artist, on the other hand, seems permanently trapped in the low 40s because she kills things way too quickly. I set her up against a High Paladin and he's on his rear end in like 3 seconds, netting me maybe 1% of a skill level. Progressing further seems impossible.

If you don't coddle Nazis flat Earthers then you're literally as bad as them.
You might be able to get a little bit further if you stack all the martial arts penalties you can but otherwise not really, there's no way to limit your damage with martial arts so you'll reach a point where training is basically impossible. Maybe if you train up a prisoner to very high levels of defence skill then hope they block most of your martial artist's attacks but it would still be slower than other weapon skills.

Also important thing to remember with training that you might not know, never train on an unarmed enemy. You only get attack experience for hitting or being blocked by an enemy, if they dodge you get nothing.
