like, there are at least a dozen proposals for things like this being developed right now, all of them being spoken of in rosy terms https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-qv76bBjjI the unspoken thing they don't ever mention in the press release material is that they typically have about 15 minutes or so flight time before the batteries die

Coxswain Balls posted:gently caress, is that blood spray off to the side in that image? It's possible that it's hydraulic fluid, which is the same color, but I had the same unsettling thought. I'm not super familiar with how readily aircraft not designed in the 1960's piss hyd fluid everywhere. e: or deicing fluid, that makes sense too. Cojawfee posted:Does the plane not have any safety measures for not pressuring the inside up to marianas trench levels? Normally yes, but it's always possible for those systems to fail. Shortly after I started working at the airport in 2016, someone erected the shoddiest bit of scaffolding I've ever seen holding up some large steel beams, holding up larger steel beams, holding up a whole lot more of said larger steel beams. It's taken me 3 years to take pictures of it because it's just the busiest service tunnel that bisects the entire airport that everyone needs to use, constantly. 4 totally structural scaffolds I guess. Someone's gotta know the airport already from this alone. That poo poo has been there, unchanged, for 3 years. Safe enough to stand for 3 years, not safe enough to touch.

Lesson to be learned? Large crowds and tunnels are bad.

It started off at this giant square filled with thousands of people, and whenever one side started to push it rolled like a wave over the whole crowd. It was really scary, there was nothing you could do but go with the flow, and hope it doesn't get worse.

More like "Some Americans are alarmed at our orwellian surveillance state. Other Americans put up Blue Lives Matter flags. These are non-overlapping group of people."

Tarantula posted:For some reason youtube recommended the love parade disaster. Video maybe because there were deaths at the incident. The lesson learned in that gently caress-up is a little more than that. The whole incident was basically the perfect storm of political posturing, cutting corners, cheaping-out on safety, lack of communication, nepotism, obscene amounts of organisational negligence and that was just the poo poo that went down before the festival. They were basically begging for any little thing to go wrong that would have caused mass panic and countless deaths in pretty much ANY setting. What's so crazy about this incident is that what happened didn't even come remotely close to the worst case you could have had there. It wouldn't even register on a scale of 1 to 10 of the worst outcomes that could have happened in that setting. Mass brawl, fire, sudden bad change in weather / torrential downpour, literally anything. There was never a real breakout of mass panic, twenty one people were just casually crushed to death with the majority of the mass slowly passing by barely even noticing. Only the people closest to that one tiny confined space were even aware that it wasn't just a bunch of people passing out, but people actually fighting for their lives. Tens of thousands of people were funneled through a total of 1300 feet of tunnel from two directions into a comically undersized on-ramp to the festival area, and at some point, the police even blocked that on ramp, and "only" twenty-one people died. The infrastructure-planning was so batshit insane that only twenty-one people dying was quite possibly the best-case outcome you could have mathematically calculated for that dumb festival. If absolutely anything even minutely worse would have happened to spark an actual mass panic, the death toll would have probably been in the high hundreds easily. The festival wasn't even close to halfway-through when poo poo hit the fan iirc. One of the accidentally-beneficial calls that were made was to keep the floats on the festival grounds running, instead of shutting the music down out of respect for the tragedy, because the on-ramp TO the festival area would have turned into THE ONLY EXIT from the festival grounds, and the "party" continuing kept removing people from the powderkeg-equation. Think two streams of around 40,000 people at the time pushing towards the T-section of the ramp, and then being compacted by a third stream started by the 200,000 plus people already in the festival area trying to leave. And here's the kicker: Three weeks ago, the court handling the criminal prosecution over the past 8 years suggested that the proceedings could be concluded with no verdicts rendered. It's somewhat fascinating how much effort goes in to working around those kinds of rules too. Elevators that stop on every floor, random delays on refrigerator compressors so their starting up isn't a direct result of opening the door, lamps with shades so the light output can be controlled while the unit itself remains on, etc.
