I mean, they're losing them while they're not loaded instead of driving them into Rabaul harbour and losing them when they're loaded. Grey has handed the AI a net win here.

Speaking of, is bombing Chunking really the best thing for all of those Betties to be doing? Are they too obsolete to go up against the USN now, even if escorted by modern fighters?

I forgot to post it in here, but I started up the Close combat mega campaign again - this will be a "when I have time" LP, but I'll try to get videos up sat/sun at least.

Here are the first two videos.

Watch the movie "Midway" or even "Tora! Tora! Tora!". They are still relevant movies that are watchable today.

Sadly midway leaves out the morning bombing of the Japanese carriers by landbased aircraft. Yes none of them hit but it was very important to the battle over all.

They leave out lots of other stuff too. Which is to be expected as it's a movie. There are a lot of decent documentaries, but they might be a bit dry for the purpose you intended (not boring your significant half with grognard details).

THUNDERDOME LOSER
They found the USS Hornet!

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/uss-hornet-wreckage-world-war-two-warship-discovered/

quote:

The research vessel Petrel is perched on a spot in the South Pacific Ocean that was anything but peaceful 77 years ago. Then, it was the scene of a major World War II battle between the U.S. and the Imperial Japanese Navies. For the U.S. aircraft carrier, Hornet, it would be her last battle.

Now, researchers are revealing Petrel found the wreckage of the USS Hornet in late January – exactly what they were looking for. The ship was found more than 17,000 feet below the surface, on the floor of the South Pacific Ocean near the Solomon Islands. The USS Hornet is best known for launching the important Doolittle Raid in April of 1942 and its role in winning the Battle of Midway.

Richard Nowatzki, 95 now, was an 18-year-old gunner on Hornet when enemy planes scored several hits, reports CBS News' Mark Phillips.

"When they left, we were dead in the water," Nowatzki said. "They used armor piercing bombs, now when they come down, you hear 'em going through the decks … plink, plink, plink, plink … and then when they explode the whole ship shakes."

With 140 of her crew already dead, the order was given to abandon ship. The Hornet went to the bottom – three and a half miles down – which the crew of the Petrel has been scanning with a deep-sea sonar drone that sends back live pictures.

The drone brought back an image of something down there that's about the right size in about the right place. It looked like her but lots of ships went down around here. To be sure, they needed positive identification, which they got when they saw the Hornet's naval designation: CV-8.

"CBS This Morning" was able to share the discovery in real time with Richard Nowatzki in California – even finding the gun he was on during the attack.

"If you go down to my locker, there's 40 bucks in it, you can have it!" Nowatzki joked.

Nowatzki has enjoyed a long life since that day. Seeing the Hornet again and the evidence of the men who served -- a jacket hung on a hatch, somebody's wash kit complete with toothbrush – naturally made him reflect on those who hadn't been as lucky.

"I know I've been a very fortunate man," he said. "The actual fact that you can find these ships is mind boggling to me … I want to thank you for honoring me this way."

But it's the crew of the Petrel who were honored to find the Hornet and the final resting place of so many of her brave crew. Another wreck, and in turn, another war grave has been discovered. Its exact location is kept secret to protect it, but the memory now has a place and the loss has a memorial.

It'll be interesting to see what other ships they go looking for in the Solomon Islands on this expedition.

It went unremarked in the thread, but Petrel found battleship Hiei last week. At a much more accessible (if still fairly deep) depth of 900m.

Ryujo would be a decent bet, she was lost at Eastern Solomons and I don't think anyone found the wreck yet.

Any other major ships in the area whose final resting places we don't know?

As I was reminded today, there actually is one more undiscovered US carrier wreck in the Solomons - Wasp. So there's a fairly decent chance Petrel might be looking for her as well. As far as I can tell, Chicago also remains unfound and also rests in the Eastern Solomons, so that's another possibility. Those two also represent the only major US ships still missing in the Solomons. Almost the last major US ships still missing period, aside from CVL Princeton (and six CVEs, if you want to count those as major).

It'll actually be interesting what they go looking for next year. The Philippines, to go looking for Princeton and the five CVEs that went down there (mostly around Leyte), plus Shokaku, Zuikaku and Taiho, or Midway for Kaga, Akagi, Soryu and Hiryu, seem like decent guesses.

If they're looking next year. Keep in mind Paul Allen funded the expeditions but I can't imagine he wouldn't have a long term plan funded and in place at the time of his death.

Yeah, I'm aware. I think I recall there was a statement put out around his death that there was a solid line of funding secured for the expeditions for the indefinite future though. That his estate continues to manage a bunch of historic WW2-era exhibits/restorations/etc would certainly seem to support that.

If the enemy did this all the time I'd get worried.

We spot an enemy cruiser, but my planes come in ragged, and we score no hits.

We claim another superfort kill.

I'm retasking my raiders to go hunting for that cruiser.

We bag ourselves a Privateer on the way home.

We do lose some planes though.

This must be doing the boys on the ground some good, morale wise.

We're just gunning them down.

Overall, it looks like we won the day in the air.
