Francine is constantly shown to be wrong and/or an idiot. Casino Normale, Iced Iced Babies, Can I Be Frank with You, Crotchwalkers, and those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head. There's also a lot of episodes like Shallow Vows and Home Wrecker were they both act equally insane.

Yeah there are some like that, but they sure like to put Stan in the wrong a good 90% of the time when he and Francine have a conflict. This new episode was a rather bizarre case. So Stan criticizes her for quitting things all the time, but he turns out to be wrong because...Francine quit being in a coma? Seems like it might have been better if instead she had not quit on life and worked to get out of the coma. Felt like they were resorting to strange logic just so they could put Stan in the wrong. I do like it more when those two are equally insane.

TheFattestPat posted:Yeah there are some like that, but they sure like to put Stan in the wrong a good 90% of the time when he and Francine have a conflict. First of all, I don't have the gumption to go through all two hundred and whatever episodes and add up all of the "Stan wrong" vs. the "Francine wrong" plot-lines to prove this definitively, but I'm still pretty positive that your math is off here with that whole "90%" thing. One of the things I like about this show is that there's no designated straight man so everyone has about an equal chance of being the crazy one from episode to episode. Second, the problem of the wasn't that Stan was wrong about Francine being a Quitter. He was 100% right, she IS a quitter. The problem was that mocking her for quitting so much was a mean thing to do. This is a story-line format that American Dad uses a lot: Character A has a flaw, Character B tries to get Character A to change this flaw, Character A changes but the change ends up being worse than the original flaw or harmful in some way, Character B realizes they were wrong for trying to force Character A to change and accepts them for who they are. This time Stan was in the role of Character B and Francine was in the role of Character A, but a good example of an episode where Francine is Character B and Stan is Character A is "The Missing Kink": Stan is sexually repressed, Francine tries to get him to do something that makes him feel uncomfortable, Stan becomes an unhinged sexual deviant, Francine realizes she was wrong to push Stan out of his comfort zone. It's actually kind of sweet that American Dad has this long running moral motif of "Be accepting of people for who they are, and that acceptance includes their imperfections". Of course, in the show a lot of these imperfections are amplified for comedic effect to the point that they border on sociopathic or criminal behavior and in the real world probably should be changed, but, well, look this is a cartoon with a talking fish and probably shouldn't be taken that seriously.

I don't feel like combing over every episode either, but they do like to crap on Stan a lot more. I'm thinking of episodes like the kidney one where Francine reveals that Stan might not be Haley's biological father because she slept with another guy before their wedding. The whole episode was focused on Stan being wrong for wanting to know if he is the biological father. Not once is Francine given any criticism for cheating on him and possibly getting knocked up by a stranger right before they got married. Those are the kinds of plots that really are not thought out well enough. This last episode wasn't anywhere near that bad, but it had similar vibes. You're right though, it is just a cartoon and shouldn't be taken too seriously. My problem is I really love this cartoon so it hurts when I see spotty writing like that.

Suffice to say, nothing changes.

drrockso20 posted:I disagree, we could have avoided a lot of really bad Steve plots if they would just have given him a steady girlfriend again I also like the idea of Steve having a girlfriend (that would open up the doors to a bunch of interesting and funny plot-lines), but the problem with Akiko is they never really seemed to know what her personality was supposed to be. She kind of just acted however the plot needed her to act at the time to move the story forward. In a show that's as focused on character based humor as American Dad that made her, and by extension her relationship with Steve, come off as kind of boring. Honestly, Akiko's mom and Francine had a way more interesting dynamic as passive aggressive rivals, more of that please.
