Let's ignore the fact that Bohemian Rhapsody is barely more competently made than Gotti or that Bryan Singer is a known bad person, it should win Best Picture to own the libs

It's really weird how all the 2018 animated shorts are about some form of strained or damaged parental relationships. It's a shame that Bao is so good and pretty much a lock. Weekends is definitely the most visually striking and One Small Step is a good tear jerker.

Also, just want to point out that Period. End of Sentence. is a good pallet cleanser for the more depressing shorts.

I suppose it would make sense to praise a movie for its marketing if you’re the kind of guy who can’t keep an “MCU boycott” going for more than a week.

going to go for the ultimate take here, get ready: black panther was fine. it's not really "best picture" material, but neither is bohemian rhapsody and at least this matters as representation. it also isn't going to win so getting overly worked up about it is a total waste of time.

Groovelord Neato posted:"sorry to bother you" was right there to nominate. It was, but the sad part is it wasn’t the highest grossing movie. I still haven’t seen it but I’m sure it’s better than BP which I find to be eh. But that doesn’t take away the impact it had.

It’s pretty big that they nominated “Minding the Gap” for best documentary. It’s indie as gently caress, it’s just a dude with a video cam filming his friends (and himself) skateboarding and living through domestic problems and poverty. Critics love it and it won all the indie awards but I really thought it was too much a stretch for it to gain mainstream recognition. For what it’s worth I did not love it, would have preferred if they nominated Shirkers, but I think you gotta celebrate a win for the little guy whenever it happens.

I watched Mid 90s, Skate Kitchen, and Minding the Gap all within like 24 hours. All decent but I think Skate Kitchen was my fave of the 3. Wouldn’t mind see MTG get the prize at all.

At least mtg has the domestic abuse angle, HC doesn't have anything. Some of the shots are really pretty I guess.

It’s also pretty remarkable that there are not one but two foreign language films nominated in Best Director. Wonder how the US distributor of Cold War made that happen. The fact that even those two noms feel like a serious underachievement is a testament to how poor the American slate was this year.
