Sedge and Bee posted:The same way exchanges do, by adding a little to every transaction between bitcoin and usd. But yeah, if it was a credit union, the idea would be to lend some of it out, possibly even generating interest. since your "bank" would be radioactive illegal anyway it's easiest just to steal the money and run

LongDarkNight posted:didn't that exist once before and it was banned by reddit and twitter? i think the main bitcoin one died but there are ones for alternative bitcoins one of the main issues with them is that you get tipped so little that you'd have to save up enough to pay for the transaction fees to actually withdraw it from their system(because of course it wasn't actually done on the blockchain) so many tips just got abandoned

Notorious b.s.d. posted:since your "bank" would be radioactive illegal anyway it's easiest just to steal the money and run Yeah I mean that's ultimately the problem I guess, any bitcoin banking co-op would have to be built within a legal framework which is why bitcoiners would hate it. But if they actually wanted mass adoption, that would actually be a step towards that. Instead they just wait until everybody with resources decides they need the decimal points on a database file.

when has an idea being illegal ever stopped the bitcoiners? an idea being to much effort is what stops them

stupid idea for a smart contract: guaranteed lending - if the loan isn't paid back in full with interest by the specified date, the original coins that were loaned out goes back to cover the missing balance, no matter who the current owner is this is good because the threat of getting their coins pulled will keep everyone in the ecosystem honest, right?

Something like bitcoin kind-of makes a little sense on the international inter-banking level. There doesn’t have to be many transactions and there’s not really a central authority. You probably also don’t want everybody to have to trust everybody (a Ukrainian bank might never trust a Russian bank, but a Belarussian probably would). Maybe that’s kind of JP Morgan’s idea?

the other problem with lending bitcoin is that since it's a pure speculative asset rather than a proper currency the price isn't remotely stable. if i want to borrow 10btc for a year and actually spend it rather than hodl, if there's a new bubble i'm screwed because my repayments are now gigantic (in reality i'll just default). on the other hand, if there's a crash the bank is screwed because they basically handed me a bunch of free money. so neither side would actually want to risk doing the loan.

LongDarkNight posted:didn't that exist once before and it was banned by reddit and twitter? the difference now is that a few days ago the twitter ceo announced that he's been converted into a hardcore bitcoiner and has been tweeting up a storm about how bitcoin is obviously the future and all the other usual breathless claims made by bitcoiners everywhere. he's trying pretty hard to convert as many twitter users as possible
