here in texas they tried to replace in person visitation with remote video and the lege actually quickly responded with a bill to ban getting rid of in person visitation. due to lobbying they added an exception for jails that already incurred significant expenses converting to video visitation. the fun comes in that the press release of the company that was doing the conversions was advertising that it was done at no expense to the jail as the company covered the costs with user fees. so then all those jails had to convert back and the company never made the money it was expecting to.
