I've been having an extremely good time with some of the total conversion mods for OpenXcom. In a nutshell, the original Xcom: UFO Defense was re-written to run on modern systems, made more mod friendly and some lingering bugs were corrected. This happened long enough ago that the mod scene has become quite interesting. I've spent the majority of my gaming time over the fall and bouncing between 2 of the larger Mods, XcomFiles and Xpiratez. If you want to know more, check out the OpenXcom forums. each mod described below has their own sub-forum. https://openxcom.org/forum/index.php/board,16.0.html Installation of either mod is roughly: 1. Download the mod (either of the ones below include OpenXcom when you download the mod - you do not need to download it separately) 2. Find wherever you have your owned copy of Xcom: ufodefense and copy over the entire ufo folder from there to the mod folder of the same name 3. The first time you launch, you'll just be running stock open xcom. If you go into mods and scroll to the bottom, find Xcomfiles or Xpiratez and change to yes. That'll relaunch the game. 4. Have fun! XcomFiles by Solarius Scorch This is a total conversion mod that essentially says, "What if Xcom started a few years before 1999, and a whole bunch of X-files type stuff was going on?" If you progress far enough, you'll get into the actual alien invasion, but the early game is spent investigating monsters, cults and the like. You start as a small agency, sending a few agents in a van to go look into a reports of oddness, such as members of a cult doing something. As you progress through a massively expanded research tree, you can make progress along an axis which allows for some mission types to be retired, while opening up new options. (Mechanically, once you progress far enough along the cult research tree branch, you'll no longer be eligible for the initial cult contact mission, and will instead start gunning for higher ups.) In this way, there are a good number of content arcs that you can pursue through a play-through, setting up your agency with various strengths and weaknesses. I've found the arcs tie together fairly well (Who do you think that cult is worshiping?!) while still telling fairly complete stories. The whole thing is really well done, and still being actively developed. XPiratez by Dioxine Another total conversion mod that I bounced off of a few times, but once it clicked for me, I fell hard for it. This one assumes that Xcom lost the initial invasion, and its 500 or so years later. Earth as a conquered backwater planet, and you guide a small group of mutant girls who break out of a research facility and find an interesting cave that becomes their base. You guide the band as a group of future mutant space pirates on merry adventures. You'll meet various factions, Explore a bounty hunting system, research and manufacture a deep pool of items, armors, weapons and charms. You'll be asked to make choices that will have knock-on effects for the remainder of your play-through. For example, at one point you'll have to use a combination of unique items you start the game with to choose from 1 of 4 paths that will grant you access to ships, gear, and research. It's a bit like choosing a character class, but at an organizational level. You get a few exclusive items (or eventual access to them), but really just a massive leg up in the area you are interested in relative to where you are in the game. If you are really into Psionics and research, you might like the grey option. If hellfire and demon summoning sound more exciting to you, check out the red. Sometimes the game presents you with a combinations of items and research that can vary your gameplay. For instance, my current playthorugh has found me delving into dressing up as maids and robbing mansions with infiltration gear as some of the first extra content I've unlocked. In my previous playthrough, I unlocked underwater missions and a submarine at around the same point. One thing to note is that if Xpiratez was a movie, it would be rated a hard R. One of the reasons I bounced off it was that it is gratuitous in nudity and "adult" situations. I get a similar vibe to, like, the extended Conan the Barbarian universe. IMO, this mod takes the core of a game I fell in 25 years ago, retains everything that made it good, and adds on a bunch of other awesome ideas and systems as well. And then adds a bunch of nakedness on top of that, for some reason. Also still being actively developed. In addition to the above 2 mods, I know there is also a fairly active Warhammer 40k based one, and a few other more extended vanilla ones. If you are someone who still has a copy of the original UFO defense on your current system, Id strongly encourage you to check a mod out!

So Long War 1 pissed me off enough, I decided to re-install WOTC and play a fully modded campaign. One mod I was always looking for is a classless mod or something similar. I know there was one mod that was literally a classless mod letting every soldier to wield every weapon and giving everyone randomised perks, there is the Better Barracks which still has some classes but the skills are randomized and I also heard about the RPG mod, but I couldn't figure out how it works or what it actually does. I'm mainly curious which of these works best, of if there is any other mod that might do something like this. It doesn't necessarily have to be classless, I mainly want a mod that expands the WOTC perk system, making every soldier unique somehow.

Bholder posted:So Long War 1 pissed me off enough, I decided to re-install WOTC and play a fully modded campaign. RPG overhaul basically does that. It lets you develop soldiers along basically any perk tree you want and there are a dozen patches adding more. Plus everyone gets some unique perks at Squaddie to nudge them in a direction (Praetorian gives +10 to hit with melee, bonus grenade perks etc). You also get to spend a pool of points to level their stats (no stats on level up). It lets you fully and completely make dumb and amazing poo poo like a soldier who uses a sword and ripjack. Or really almost any combo you want (obviously some perks are exclusive or require perk chains to work correctly) Better Barracks still has classes but semi-randomizes the perk trees. So he assigned classes 5 tier 3 perks and any given member of that class might roll 3 of those along with two universal filler perks. I personally find a lot of the changes made in A Better Barracks just obnoxious (Cannons take 2 actions to shoot, reload or overwatch, but have kore ammo and a 1 action 'quickshot' with -20 to hit, Shotguns have to be reloaded one bullet at a time) but some people swear by it. Your dudes are definitely weaker than in Vanilla. Zore fucked around with this message at 06:11 on Feb 23, 2019 |

I’m The Commander Here allows you to swap perks, for a small price (in AP). You still have the randomly generated ones, but it doesn’t cost much to swap those in if you roll something useless.

Bholder posted:So Long War 1 pissed me off enough, I decided to re-install WOTC and play a fully modded campaign. so RPGOverhaul unlocks every weapon for people and gives every soldier you have the universal class 'soldier'. This gives them 2 random traits: a background and one random trait. Then almost every tree from every soldier class is organised into a specialisation that can be taken, along with some other options, like the skirmisher tree. A number of other class mods release 'specialisation packs' that transport those class trees into RPGO. It sounds like what you're looking for in terms of 'classless', but there's random elements. EDIT: beaten, generally. Torchlighter fucked around with this message at 07:27 on Feb 23, 2019 |

I wish MINT was still being developed, I liked that more than RPG overhaul. Haven't tried rpgo since other people started hooking ok to it though. Instead I use a bunch of individual classes and allies unknown. Pretty good variety that way.

Turns out the Commander wasn't actually all that strategically important; they're just Bradford's kid and it happened to be Take Your Kid To Work Day when the events of XCom 1 unfolded. Which...puts a much darker spin on Bradford's struggle with alcoholism leading up to the eventual rescue at the beginning of XCom 2, now that I think about it

I'm currently rolling with LW2 Shinobi, LW2 Sharpshooter (modded to use Pistols), Shadow Ops Combat Engineer, Shadow Ops Dragoon, Shadow Ops Juggernaut and Richard's Mage (modded to remove random stat ups and with an additional brigadier rank to match the other classes) Now if only I could figure out how to mod the faction classes. They basically break if you look at them funny.

The only ones I would really avoid are the broken ones (gauntlet integration and Biotic class are both glitchy and don't work correctly). Otherwise I definitely like the Samurai, Shadow Ops, Long War, Psi and Shardwielder plugins. I would also recommend a mod to bump up the Faction classes and Sparks if you want to use them since RPGO doesn't touch them. And an enemy mod like ABA2 to even the playing field with enemy buffs.

I'm currently playing basically a Star Wars overhaul, with the Advent to Empire mod as well as tons of Star Wars related bells and whistles. Heck, even got star wars music playing in the background. Got my final team pretty much set up and bonded, Han + Lando, Luke + Leia, Rey+Kylo, Jango + Mace (haha), Obi-Wan + Anakin, Finn+Poe, and it's been good fun with the jedi class mod, even if that thing is OP as hell. Next go around is going to be with RPGO and then mass effect mods. Shepherd, Garrus, Liara, and Wrex back together again! Thinking what I'll do is console command myself enough soldiers to form up every team member of ME1,2,3 to give to myself at the start. However, I can't recruit any more after that, so best not get too many killed early game or the fatigue mechanics will bite me in the butt later. Except I'll leave Ashley to die on the Lost mission. The Skirmisher Heavy is the best, the Reaper Scythe is the second best, especially because you can do bladestorm shenanigans, and the templar psion is pretty boring. https://github.com/X2CommunityCore/xcom2-launcher/releases/tag/v1.2.3 I have the marksman (with brace) but I haven't found sniper classes to be all that great on the whole.
