It's more that it's CBS, which is traditionally "TV for old people" that is trying to make it happen. And they're trying to do it with nerdy nostalgia, like Star Trek and The Twilight Zone.

Like, when they announced it originally, I remember thinking, "Streaming service so I can watch episodes of NCIS? Yeah, I'll pass, and your target audience still doesn't understand streaming." Then they went after the older nerds.

...which, to be fair, isn't a bad plan.

Based on this and Discovery, they're really trying to target a younger market with All-Access. Discovery is probably the first Star Trek with an F-bomb scene and naked (Klingon) female breasts. Also a severed baby head (also Klingon).

Have you seen Brawl in Cell Block 99? Craig S Zhaler has a very specific aesthetic - it's hard to explain, I'm not a film critic, but it's a kind of heightened realism. His action is brutal and elongated in a way that feels like "this is how it would play out if it happened in real life".

It also happens that the trailer is butchered beyond belief. Really not doing the film any favors there. Zhaler's films are edited well so I imagine the film will be much better than the trailer lets on.

On the one hand, as far as I'm aware he hasn't actually said or done anything bad.

On the other hand, he cast Mel Gibson in his new movie that is apparently a defense of police brutality, the script he wrote for the new Puppet Master movie is mostly the Nazi dolls gleefully chopping up Jews and POC, and Cell Block 99 has a lot of lines like "the colors of the flag aren't red, white and burrito."

So I don't know if he's racist but he certainly seems to love edgelord dick-waggling

^^ This. He doesn't have to go on a Twitter rant or anything like that, he promotes his views through his film making. If Block 99 wasn't a complete and utter slog to get through I might overlook it and just roll my eyes, but no. I know people love that film though, so I'll put it down to different tastes and gladly not watch anything else he makes.

"Tell that to Zod's snapped neck!"

his movies are:

1. A movie where cowboys slaughter literally (as in they are not human in the terms of the movie) savage Native Americans

2. A movie where a former white supremacist goes to prison to kill a bunch of criminals lest a crazed asian forcibly abort his/his wife's baby

3. A movie where nazi puppets kill a bunch of minorities/liberals in the name of "triggering" people

4. A movie starring two of the most notable CHUDs in Hollywood about police brutality

if it was just one of these in a career of mostly un-notable films it would probably just be reading too much into it but there's a pattern here. Is he explicitly a racist/white supremacist? It doesn't really matter, the movies he makes clearly lay out a worldview that is sorta gross and definitely makes me not want to watch his movies.

Back when Bone Tomahawk came out on streaming and all goons were praising it (or at least some goons, enough to make me watch it anyway), I did try and watch it but I never got further than when the cowboys or whoever are killed in the briar patch. It was just boring, and it looked like poo poo, the contracts or something was too high.

I really want to hear the reason why this color grading job is actually fantastic because of what it represents, rather than being just lovely.

e: something the lab wrote

quote:

"First off, be warned this is a very violent movie but, violence with a story telling purpose. It had a very small theatrical run in the US so I highly suggest picking it up on Blu Ray to watch it" states LookLabs' Jeff August. "The other reason I love this movie is its very unique color palette, check out some of the frame grabs below and you will see a very unique Blue-Green combination look. This feel was what LookLabs was after when creating the SpeedLooks Matrix package. If you want to achieve this look you simply need to apply SpeedLooks Matrix Blue. It will get you 90% there, to finish it out, I suggest playing with the LUTs strength by adjusting its transparency to dial in just the right amount. Have fun with it - you'll be amazed how easily you can achieve this deadly look."

I like how it's called the Matrix package. Ah yes, just like how The Matrix got a hideous green tint applied to it for home release that everyone hated, this too follows in those footsteps. And they even admit it's just a case of applying the preset and you're essentially done. I'm sure a real ton of care was spent with that last 10% (that never happened).

Yeah, Brawl in Cell Block 99 made Tarantino violence look PG13 in comparison. I don't like Vaughn's and Gibson's views, but I do think they can deliver solid performances if the script and direction is solid. Vaughn's performance in Brawl 99 is arguably the best in his career IMO.
