Is there some webpage that goes over every mayoral candidate's positions on every issue? I am having trouble finding something like this. I found an article showing that sometime last week 19% of voters were undecided, Preckwinkle was leading the pack at 14% with the next four candidates within spitting distance of each other, and a full 60% of voters think Chicago is heading in the wrong direction which probably explains the huge number of undecided. I am definitely part of that 60%, and right now part of that 19% because everything I've heard from these candidates seems to just be more of the same budget wise. It just evokes a feeling of complete apathy -- a feeling I've never had going into an election before. I wonder how many other voters are thinking along the same lines.

Chuu posted:I always assumed Amazon knew exactly where it wanted HQ2 and this whole mess was just to extract as many concessions out of the winner as possible. There's probably a really interesting story here that we won't find out for a decade. They definitely did, and basically announced it when they said "access to government regulators, financial markets, and major universities". But people from Chicago tried to claim they meant the Board of Trade and Northwestern/U. Chicago instead of Wall Street and the entire Ivy League.

drat the middle class really is dead.quote:UIC’s maps show that fully half of the city was middle income in 1970, including large swaths on every side of town. Today, just 16 percent of the city’s 797 census tracts are considered middle income. Those middle income areas are confined mostly to the corners of the city, and to thin strips between areas of wealth and poverty.

I wonder what conversation Martwick is trying to start if it isn't "What the gently caress is wrong with Martwick?" He's done a huge disservice already to the progressive income tax debate by filing a straw bill on the subject. There wasn't a single democrat up for the state house this past election that didn't at least once have to stumble around trying to explain away that stupid rear end bill at some point in their campaign. Seriously, dude. Stop. NomChompsky fucked around with this message at 22:43 on Feb 19, 2019 |

Amara's campaign has hit me up about 3 times a day directly. I also get a lot of anti Bill Daley and some clickbaity "Watch what's being called the coolest ad of the Mayoral Campaigns" texts. It's pretty annoying!

I’m a 30yo white dude living in Chicago, and I voted in Chicago for the first time last year, and somehow I get none of this poo poo, maybe I’m just lucky (so far). All I get are daily flyers in the mail and the same canvassers on my daily walk to the L and back. Wanna ask one of them which aldermanic candidate isn’t endorsed by the cops so I know who to vote for.

# ? Feb 25, 2019 00:57 |
Very grateful for my out of state phone number cause I don't get any of this poo poo.

My work phone is literally my only phone. I think that's what keeps people away because technically, I don't even own a phone. It's also an 815 area code, which I'm sure helps. I early voted on Friday, super fast, and it's a little weird to go in and just vote on 4 things. Whole process took 5 minutes.

So I looked into it, and my ward (45th) doesn’t have a candidate who isn’t a cop, or isn’t endorsed by cops, or isn’t otherwise explicitly pro-cop. I can’t tell the difference between them at all, besides that at least two of them are against weed legalization (lol)

You're right by me in the 39th, and you're where like half the cops in the city live. They pretty much all live in the far NW and SW reaches of the city, so it's not really that surprising, but it is frustrating.

My podunk town's politics are getting exciting. https://www.rblandmark.com/News/Articles/2-26-2019/Brookfield-trustee-candidate-under-fire-for-Facebook-posts/ quote:"Facebook is not a reality, and I don't think people realize that," said Galbraith in response to being confronted by Brookfield resident Mark McCann about his social media presence at a candidate meet-and-greet hosted by Indivisible Brookfield at Slager's on 47th on Feb. 19. The only thing dumber than those facebook posts is knowing that those questions were coming and having that be your best response.

What are good strategies for Plurality-at-large voting? To be more specific I have 5 votes to split among 10 candidates for 5 council positions. In the primary, my top candidate got 9th place, my second candidate got 7th place and my third candidate got 1st place.

There's a possibility that socialists could comprise 10 percent of the Chicago City Council after the April election.

JB out with his flat tax proposal https://capitolfax.com/2019/03/07/pritzker-unveils-proposed-graduated-tax-rates/#comments Note that it's marginal up to the $1M bracket---then it's a flat tax on all the income. e: meaning if you make $999,999, you're paying marginal in each bracket as you go. If you make $1,000,000, you're paying 7.85% on the entirety of your income. brugroffil fucked around with this message at 21:37 on Mar 7, 2019 |

I don't think JB ran on "tax cuts for everyone!" so yeah that $50 or whatever is inconsequential but it helps with the "tax cuts for 97% of Illinoisians" messaging. You'll be shocked to learn that the IL GOP (what's left of it) is lockstep against it already.

Is there any state that has hiked its taxes on the top brackets like that? Just curious if there is any actual evidence before all the “Job creators will leave” arguments start up.

Help me out with my cynicism and the mechanics of this. Mechanically, that's the proposal to get support for a ConCon so that he can pass this tax plan? Cynically, depending on the wording, if the ConCon works then they can change the tax rates after that with a majority then? If so is there any way all those tax brackets aren't back over 5% in a few years after that? Not that Illinois doesn't need the money.
