It's the Roger McGuinn signature - he wanted a six string with some of his 12's jangle and a high G is the most obviously audible pairing apparently. I've done a bit with an electric with just the D and G pairs and could see how it would work. The unison courses can sound sour unless you spend hours on tuning and the bass octave courses can be a bit dominating in the mix, so this way you get a bit of both worlds.
