This week's dev blog is up, touching on the background lore of the new northmen faction: http://battlebrothersgame.com/dev-blog-116-the-barbarians-part-i/ Those armours look fully sick.

I was kind of hoping I'd get to murder one, though. I'm also really glad they're giving you the option to play as the new guys, too. That way you can play with all the new equipment sooner. More importantly, it'll be a good excuse to finally try playing as a brigand.

How far, I wonder, could you take the brigand lifestyle with these new guys? I am reminded of how Beastmen in Total War basically just consume towns and move on without putting down roots. Normal gameplay in Battle Brothers is fostering relations and buying goods, but I wonder if you can actually be successful enough at pillaging villages and caravans to get by without spending a dime in a village market.

I don't think you can play as these guys yourself. The Raider background says you start as Brigands with some of the nordic/Rus gear, not the Barbarian faction.

I hope if raiding towns is something to be added if we get new City/Camp battlemaps. Could spice up the combat more.

Historically, raiders and brigands still went to markets. Those were just different markets from the ones they robbed. Real life pirates do the same thing, where some ports are for pillaging, and some ports are for selling your slightly-bloody goods at a discount, no questions asked. Mercenaries could be even more audacious. During the 30-years-war, there are few tales of mercenaries setting up temporary markets right next to a recently sacked town, and selling unwieldy looted possessions for coin back to the survivors of the sack.

Raiding would be way more viable if we can have places to resupply tools other than towns and settlements.

Goblin City. I ended up giving everyone shields with the exception of the trio of Polebros (I am pretty sure that mastery will get nerfed in the next big patch), even my usual two-handers, because Gobbos have high-evasion and low health, so hitting and cheer damage is what matters, so swords and spears for reliability, cleavers for damage and maces for convenient stuns. The Bros with the Flail and Axe have reds I feel were good enough even in this situation. The only one without the +ranged defense shield also has a red that's just as good against ranged fire. I also figured having shields was more important than damage since it's going to rain arrows and bolas. Note that the ranged dudes in the backline are all going to switch to Billhooks or shield+weapon sets after the battle starts, they're all mediocre shooters. This is just my usual setup to bait a charge. Map was decent enough, I came at night because I felt the archers were a liability with all the wolves moving around, also so the shamans would spend most of their actions giving night vision instead of casting vines or mosquitos on my guys. I still spread out the party in duos or trios to minimize the effects of snaring vines. In retrospective, I think Night Owl potions and a more circular formation, plus the Footwork + Dogployment maneuver could have made archers effective in this situation, but I didn't have any of the potions and it would be a long trip to craft them. Battle was pretty much decided at this point, what really did the Goblins in was their morale breaking. Only one loss. RIP Wigald. Not a bad Bro, but his only really good stat was fatigue, an acceptable price to pay for the grand prize. Spoiler for the aftermath of the Goblin City, if anyone is curious. I've done the Witch's Hut before. Now there's only the Kraken and Black Monolith to consider the game beaten, onwards!

So I've encountered alps in about 2-3 battles now, and wow they suck to fight. Am I missing something, or is it optimal to take the armor off of all your bros and have them run around naked when fighting alps? Since armor doesn't seem to do anything vs. the nightmares they spawn. It just gives your bros fatigue penalties. I feel like I must be missing something, because running around naked seems real dumb. Actually, my current best strategy vs. alps is to immediately decline any quest that involves villagers getting nightmares.

Yeah I guess running around naked is a pretty common nightmare, so Battle Brothers is just being true to real life. Alps make nightmares come true in more ways than one.

I think so, since the DLC that guy gives you a quest when you first visit the Goblin City (either take out Goblin patrols or burn down 5 outposts) before you can attack it properly.

Since armor doesn't seem to do anything vs. the nightmares they spawn. It just gives your bros fatigue penalties. I feel like I must be missing something, because running around naked seems real dumb. It’s been brought up several times. All you have to do is give each bro a wardog. The war dogs have tons of AP; so they can move and do multiple attacks per round. They kill the nightmares - usually they can kill 2 per round - and you just fan out and kill the alps. It takes a long time in terms of rounds but it’s piss easy even for a very early company as long as you have dogs. Has anyone ever attempted to make a Dagger specialist? I'm tempted because of the Obsidian Shard. I was wondering if it was still worth it to make them a duelist; since Puncture doesn't get the bonus from double grip; and the added ignore armor is pointless when puncture completely ignores armor - the regular attack is made better of course but that's hardly going to help against armored dudes. I think maybe keeping them in a shield is the way to go; and maybe giving them Fearsome since they're attacking 3 times in a turn, thus triggering 3 morale checks. Ah, right, I forgot about dogs. I need to start budgeting for them. So if you really wanted the optimal loadout vs alps, you’d have your bros be completely buck naked, with just a spear and a war dog.

I usually give one of my bros Dagger Mastery but it's always in combination with a second one and Quick Hands on a shield user. Daggers pair well with swords since swords do good damage but falter against heavy armor, and because swords don't use up the Fatigue you desperately need for Puncture. Giving a mace bro Dagger Mastery also works well because it turns the bro into a good Geist hunter and makes him much better at fighting Orcs. And maces > swords. I'm currently being inspired by the thread to try out dagger mastery. So far the added mobility from 3 AP attacks is nice. Perhaps it would combine well with other mobility skills? I'm still early in the game tho, and it seems too bad that it's difficult to find anything better than basic daggers.

Tier 3 daggers cost like 600, that should really be the least of your worries unless the game hates you and you can absolutely not find them at any weaponsmith. Which can happen, of course.
