This makes a lot of good points.

Obviously with party politics it's a bit different, because many of those people really wield power over things, but like with the people criticizing Diane Abbott, how many are bravely speaking truth to power and how many just wanted a thinly veiled pop at the black woman, either for purity bollocks or because they're racists? She's said things that I strongly disagree with, but is getting outraged at the shadow home secretary really the best use of my efforts given what the actual real home secretary is up to?

I'm glad that so many of the so-called centre-left nailed their colours to the mast about Nazi Pug Guy before getting outraged at criticism of Israel by Labour though, it makes it much easier to see the kind of faith that their points are made in (it's bad, op).

I mean, Willsman - the author of that little note on the vaunted trade-union link - is still CLPD leader. He's even on the Labour NEC again. I don't think he's changed his spots that much since.

the nature of member participation is a kind of permanent intra-left morass... Wilde remarked more than a century ago that socialism takes too many evenings. In our neoliberal era we stir in the additional assumptions that 1) the only legit participation is individually egalitarian (i.e., OMOV), with perhaps some ethnic/LGBTQ minimal representation to taste 2) we all love centrally-imposed and centrally-enforced due process rights, and the only argument is over what should be due. How this coexists with the anarchist tendency is anyone's guess.

not gonna reply to the second bit as you even put in the word assumption this time but it's worth noting to others who read this that CLPD was on slates that specifically had as part of their manifesto to protect and extend OMOV, as far back as 2002 that I could find, I'm also like not a member of the CLPD or wish to join it personally, I just said that the disaffected momentum people will probably join up in some proportion. I think this all skips over the effects on union organising and prevention of auto enrolment into the labour party from government decree, which means that there hasn't really been a coherent position on it. As a party we haven't had any form of conversation or democratic decision on the general form of labour party -> labour relations and appropriate levels of democracy and labour party decree over union behaviour (e.g. it's much easier to sell unions as a special case to be considered separate from the members if unions are also following the same rules). I think personally a lot of it comes from the lack of overarching vision for a utopian future/government as transitional plan and the inherent limits in this 'hyperpragmatic' approach to politics, e.g. that it becomes incapable of seeing outside the confines of a narrow ideology.

I think that's always been one of the core problems with Corbyn and the left as a whole, and I say that as someone who genuinely likes everything he stands for. The 'kinder politics' he keeps trying so hard to maintain just doesn't reflect the anger the left feels at the poo poo the right is getting away with nowadays. Nor does it allow him to capitalise on the huge openings the Tories are leaving.

Taking the moral high ground and playing fair is great in theory, but in practice it just leaves an opposition who's leader won't oppose and where the right gets to use all the dirty tricks.

It's like a political version of the cinderella complex, believing that by virtue of just doing the right thing, people will listen. But that doesn't work in a world where the right has the ad money, the largest media distribution networks, and nobody's stopping them.

This is kind of like arguing that because the enemy army still has bigger numbers and better cannons, the plan of whittling away at their supply lines hasn’t yet worked. So we should go and face them head on in a decisive battle.

Truth is to politics as terrain is to war; an advantage you can make use of, or a handicap you can overcome.

It is super complicated, but there's a lot more pressing issues in both trans/NB advocacy and women's sports than "what if a trans won the olympics? just what would we do?" so I have to assume that the people bringing it up are acting in poor faith.

This was also brought up last time. It was the kind of injury that happens all the time (but is only an issue when a trans woman inflicts them, nobody complains when they get beat).

As I understand it the only significant difference between cis women and trans women in combat sports is bone density:- trans women's bones weigh more, so the weight categories will punish them for having less muscle by body weight. Hormone levels take care of the rest.

How long after someone is within normal range for a female humans hormone levels should they be before they can compete in women's divisions?

Seb Coe certainly wants to.

Which is more than enough for me to say no. But honestly, I'd mostly be in favour of lumping everyone in together if it has to happen at all. I've got absolutely no time for the fragility of white masculinity when the inevitable happens and a woman wins at a thing that has men in it. Especially in sports like target shooting, archery, horse riding of any sort, etc.

I'll address these together because they make the same fundamental point I think. This seems legit for now - but as society at large catches up with a modern understanding of gender identity, which i don't doubt it is, I suspect the question will be brought up more and more in a genuine, good-faith way, either from the perspective of trans people in sport generally, or from the perspective of why the gently caress clay pigeon shooting, archery, and table tennis (&c &c) are even segregated in the first place. As a generation grows up which fundamentally doesn't see gender the way the current incumbents in governing bodies do, it will come up a lot.

And it's bullshit that womens' prizes are lower, and womens' sport is basically second class in most areas - but if you just lump everyone in together, then you can guarantee that women would practically disappear from much of top level sport, even more than they already do, because in the end, androgens are a performance enhancer, and the best male-from-birth people will always beat the field. Bolt would still hold the 100m sprint world record even against the best female sprinters throughout history, but probably wouldn't if he had been taking estrogen. So it doesn't exactly advance the cause of women in most cases, even though the cases where it does would be absolutely glorious to watch.

And as ever, just because there are more pressing issues doesn't mean the less pressing ones shouldn't be brought up, and doesn't mean that they won't be brought up, and when they are brought up, a deeper examination is probably needed than 'it's not about sport it's about eradicating trans people' because to the average person hearing the discussion, it IS about sport.

Pilchenstein posted:

IOC went with one year.

Now, surgery will no longer be required, with female-to-male transgender athletes eligible to take part in men’s competitions “without restriction”.
Meanwhile, male-to-female transgender athletes will need to demonstrate that their testosterone level has been below a certain cutoff point for at least one year before their first competition.
