Resistance contacts are up there with scientists and engineers as my favorite scan sites. I was a little tempted to say something when they ignored it, but that definitely would have been strategy advice :P But they do have resistance comms coming up which will be a big help.

Grenading starter enemies with 3hp? On Veteran they start with 4hp, just enough to rely on that. The game has its issues, but they were definitely aware that you don't need big numbers to make a difficulty change, and a point here or there can change things dramatically.

Threat Assessment: puts a character into Overwatch as well as getting +20defense, even if they've taken a shot this turn. This can be a bit of an action economy boost if you're using aid protocol anyway. Covering Fire: Overwatch normally triggers on enemy movement. With this, your unit will take their overwatch shot when an enemy in view does any action, whether movement or shooting or whatever. Both abilities have their niche.

One important consideration about threat assessment is that aid protocol only takes 1 action point and doesn't end your turn. Sadly the base game does not indicate this (Mods or the expansion do).

threat assessment seems much, much better on a unit that will ideally be hacking and kill confirming much more than overwatch-ing E: wait can you aid protocol yourself? If so, does going into overwatch too give you multiple shots?

Nice work on the alien ruler! I was actually pretty convinced your first run in with a ruler would wipe your squad, so I'm glad you were willing to cheat a little. You mention roster depth being hard to get because newbies are vulnerable, but the GTS being able to freely train rookies up to the first level is extremely good. I don't really get the complaint about it taking too long, either; it's been sitting empty for now since you didn't want to spend the supplies to recruit during the dark event, but if it wasn't you'd be getting a steady supply of promoted soldiers. Covering Fire and Threat Assessment are tricky abilities in that both can actually make a character worse. As noted in the video, a covering fire overwatch shot against a target in cover means that the accuracy is reduced by both the defense bonus for the cover and the accuracy penalty for being an overwatch shot (the mod I play with makes covering fire give a penalty to the target's aim even if it misses, which actually makes it useful and, you know, covering fire). Meanwhile, Threat Assessment raises the cooldown of aid protocol from 1 to 2, which means if you use it frequently (which is quite likely, since a specialist can Aid Protocol and shoot/hack/heal in the same turn), it's actually a big penalty. And it suffers the same problems as covering fire does. That said, I voted for Threat Assessment, since you haven't really been making heavy use of aid protocol so far. And as your plan is to take two specialists, you can also alternate the ability so the cooldowns aren't such a big deal. Also if you're really on the ball you can give overwatch to the guy who got the bonus ability to take multiple overwatch shots. Xenoborg posted:One important consideration about threat assessment is that aid protocol only takes 1 action point and doesn't end your turn. Sadly the base game does not indicate this (Mods or the expansion do). The base game does tell you this: The icon I circled in red indicates the action ends your turn. The cost based ability colors mod is a much more elegant and simple way of showing it, though. GeneX posted:E: wait can you aid protocol yourself? If so, does going into overwatch too give you multiple shots? Yeah, you can Aid Protocol yourself, and it's possible to queue up multiple overwatch shots with it (either on the specialist or someone else). Voting Threat Assessment. You're doing really well so far! I don't think you're quite in a death spiral but you're definitely on the knife edge. Some good choices in the next few game weeks will help.

Note that Threat Assessment says "Give target Covering Fire Overwatch," as in the other ability choice making them shoot for enemy attacks and such. Still, I'd say Threat Assessment is the better pick.

I like to go with covering fire myself, just because I do really love using aid protocol a lot and hate having extra cooldown. But that's a good point that Nat and Tea haven't been using it as often.

My vote went to Threat Assessment. In my own blind assessment, it seems to be just straight-up better than Covering Fire. You can either do it yourself, or you can give it to anyone, without ending your own turn, and it doubles up with their own Overwatch. Also, since you seem to favor the Bolt Caster (which is single-shot) on Eimi, and she has plenty of other actions already, she probably won't be doing much Overwatching herself. Just don't use it on Funky (because he'll probably be using Suppression a lot when not directly shooting/grenading) or Sharpshooters (because you like to play them as snipers, not pistol specialists and Covering Fire will take the shot with the pistol). Also, you might want to consider giving the Bolt Caster to Ella when she and Eimi are on the same mission. IIRC, it has higher accuracy, which will work well with Rupture. In fact, you probably should be doing everything you can to pump Ella's accuracy, because Rupture seems pretty good.

A detail the guys might have missed is that in addition to causing more damage on future hits, it also is a guaranteed critical hit unto itself. Hence that 9 on the officer. They’ll come to love it when really high HP enemies coughOrbcough start being more common. Or when shieldbearers show up again and get to do anything before dying. Also, regarding Serial: you’re totally right about not seeing any more 3HP guys to chain kill. But what is an 8HP guy really except a 3HP guy plus another shot to the face before you activate Serial?

For example, the LPers probably have absolutely no idea who Vahlen is.

FWIW, for Nat and Tea, this can probably be spoiled as it only pertains to XCOM1 story: Doctor Vahlen was XCOM1's Tygan. Much higher on the Mad Scientist scale. She really - and I mean really - enjoyed dissecting aliens, which could explain the experiments that led to the creation of... whatever it is you're facing. anilEhilated fucked around with this message at 11:17 on Mar 2, 2019 |

I've noticed a couple of points where Tea's shown concern over how interesting overwatch happy play is to watch and I agree with your response to him. In the first game I was sometimes guilty of 10+ overwatch turns hoping to bait out a single activated sectoid scooting around in the darkness. Now THAT is dull gameplay. A few turns of catching your breath, being cautious, is actually just an interesting example of you guys really getting the hang of the game's systems. Because the DLC missions are extra-long events, and WotC turned willpower into an exhaustion mechanic that drains rather quickly as you fight. If they included the missions soldiers would be bottomed out and panicing every turn halfway in.

Should probably spoiler the WOTC mechanics. Anyway, you guys are doing magnificently for total noobs who insisted on playing on Normal for some unfathomable reason. Oh, one other observation: I'd say that using the scouting power Emi has as soon as wave 1 is clear is definitely a good idea now, given the evident potential for alien ruler bullshit while I wouldn't be averse to treating said enemies as an exception to your informal ironman run, I doubt you're willing to justify it to yourselves, so

One thing I'd like to solicit opinion on: Our episodes are getting longer, my intention with any LP is to have episodes that sit around 25-30 minutes long or so, but also to aim to finish an LP in around 40-50 episodes in general. It's becoming apparent that this is unlikely to be possible in XCOM, although I can't actually be sure. I've a few concerns about people potentially finding the episodes overly long and annoying to watch as a result. There are a few options we have: 1. Keep going as we are now, 3 episodes a week 40-50 minutes in length. 2. Cut episodes back down to 20-30 minutes but have the LP go on for much longer and potentially have less viewer interaction as we bank more episodes. 3. Cut out Geoscape stuff into .5 episodes like with episode 18.5 and just quickly summarise what we've been up to before starting the next mission. I think option 1 is probably the best for now, but obviously I'd love to hear your thoughts.

# ? Mar 3, 2019 23:43 |

To give yall a rough estimate on the game length. If you're shooting for 40-50 updates, the previous xcom2 lp finished in 40 updates following a similar pattern of gradually lengthening, but it wasn't blind so you'll probably take a bit longer. The WoTC lp that is going on right now is at update 44 and near the end of the game as well, so that looks like a reasonable timeframe for your update goal if you don't mind videos gradually expanding out in length as things get more complicated tactically.
|
# ? Mar 4, 2019 00:00 |

The WotC ones are often an hour or longer though. I like the current episode length and frequency, so if you're happy let the lp take how long it takes I'd do that

Yeah, I guess I should have mentioned that both those lps hit missions lasting around an hour in the late game.

I mean, personally I'd just prefer "one mission an episode, regardless of length," but I like longer-form videos anyway, because I usually throw them on the second screen while I Warframe. I get why you'd keep them shorter though. Definitely don't cut out the Geoscape IMO, watching you guys make... interesting choices is half the fun.
