The video length stuff is due to break points for ads on YouTube. It has to be a certain length for a preroll and a certain other length for a mid video ad. I think it’s 3 and 10 minutes respectively but I’m not 100%

Videos in place of in game tutorials are annoying but I guess better than nothing if that’s the alternative

All of them make whatever the minimum length for making money is by putting in content. You know, interesting facts or analysis etc rather than just being wacky and padding poo poo with reaction shots and super verbose descriptions.

You can stretch your content in interesting ways. I personally find the way that the slow mo guys do it to be very uninteresting and get in the way of what they’re doing.

Alternatively just pad out your video with more poo poo in slow mo. That polish guy who crushes random poo poo in a hydraulic press is a good example. But you can't deny that it works for them though, they have 12 million subscribers and they regularly break 1 million views per video; plus if you consider the overlap with their Roosterteeth / Let's Play fanbase (Particularly for Gavin), those fans especially want to see reaction shots.

Assuming the hydraulic press channel is the one you're talking about, 2.1 million subscribers, though similar average views per video though with lower lows.

But this is an apples to oranges comparison, would you also criticize Mythbusters* or top gear for the presenters for visibly enjoying their work? There is a universal valid criticism to laugh tracks irrespective of the quality of the underlying show, i.e they're condescending and don't trust the audience to find the "funny parts" funny. While presenters visibly enjoying and reacting to "awesome things happening" I've almost never seen criticized before this thread. It isn't being about immune from criticism, it's about whether, when informed of the fuller context, is that criticism really reasonable?

There's a simple counter argument here, and that if you *just* had a video about the part you'd prefer to see, then it would not have an interesting pacing curve, and that the video from a cinematographic perspective is improved by giving your audience breathing space; since Gavin Free works in the film/production industry I wouldn't be surprised if this was a deliberate choice.

*I think MB *does* IRIC in fact get some flake for a *lot* of repetition that they do/did but not for having it at all I think.

Aye, no fancy titles and graphics, no begging for subscribers or t shirt sales, no 10 min explainer at the start for what's happening in the episode- just solidly researched, interesting content. My wife has no real interest in firearms but happily sat through a few episodes because he could frankly be looking at antique screwdrivers and still be just as interesting.

Yeah, I think I've watched almost every episode they have put up the last 3 years or so. Mainly in 6 hour marathons. Here in Greece we almost can't even own firearms lol.
At the end of the day, you watch what you really want to. Different people enjoy different stuff, and while for some "unscripted" interaction or inside jokes makes their day (this is how most thematic vloggers make their money), others only want the content. Fast and without lube. And sometimes, the same person that watches said content changes preferences as time goes on..this has happened to me with a number of channels.

However good your social interaction skills and engagement practices though, you cannot really beat at the end of the day properly produced and researched content. Which is a reason that channels like Kurzgesagt or NileRed or CGP Grey or Ahoy can really live on patreon, produce immaculately researched stuff and still only post a video a month or sth.

I'm not criticizing anyone for visibly enjoying their work, what I"m criticizing is the utter lack of content in a lot of these videos. Slow Mo Guys aren't nearly the worst example, but we're talking about them so I'll pick a random video to give an example:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=naE7fK-gCPs

7 minutes long. The first 30 seconds is basically a supercut of what's coming up. This is lifted directly from TV and makes sense if you want to encourage people to watch the rest. Still, you can skip right over it if you already want to watch the video.

Next 30 seconds is them joking about how hard it is to film birds and how live animals don't do what you want them to. First slow mo bit comes in 1 min. into the video. The next minute (up to about 2:15) is them talking about how some birds flap their wings fast, some flap their wings slow. They then discuss that they took video of a humming bird and describe how they'll watch it flap its wings and count how many times it does in a second, before actually doing it. It's repetitive as hell. This could be compressed down to a tight 30 seconds, and would benefit heavily from them actually talking while the video is going.

Next you have about 45 seconds of banter about how that's really fast and some jokes about how it looks unimpressive in slow mo and "oh you could flap your arms faster?" This is filler but its supposed to be comedy so whatever. I think it falls flat, but maybe I'm not the audience.

Next minute they look at video of a humming bird and eagle side by side, and basically say 'they fly differently.' There's one interesting comment about how it looks like they generate lift differently. Again, this is useful but could be edited down to less than half of the length.

The next minute and a half is a great example of how this poo poo can be done well. They interview a bird expert who explains how both animals generate lift and - here is the key - they cut back and forth between him talking and slow mo footage that explains what he's talking about. They're not padding it out by another minute by having him talk then show the video, then go back to talking. This is a pretty big difference between this and the earlier segments.

The next minute is them talking about how birds blink. This is back to the earlier pattern where they talk then do the video then talk more and just stretch everything out. It could be a tight 20 seconds, but it's 60.

After that is the usual 30 second call to action - like, subscribe, etc.

It's a 7 minute video that could, with the fat trimmed out, be a really good 4 minute video.

Now compare that to something like MythBusters. Sure there's filler, but in general it's a lot less. Basically it's put together more like the good minute and a half of the slowmo guys video above, where you have the jokes and commentary running alongside the poo poo they're showing.

All that said, Slow Mo Guys is actually an example of a relatively high quality Youtube show. If you want the REALLY bad poo poo you have to look at the stuff that isn't even trying to just be entertainment (which is a good excuse for a lot of that filler banter) but is ostensibly just to be informative.

Here's a guy explaining how to mortar a stuck, unfired cartridge out of an AR. He's basically a gun grandpa and has the charisma of a potato, but he explains it clearly in 30 seconds.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNI3-VgDY20

Here's another guy explaining how to get a stuck, fired case out of an AR. He REALLY emphasizes how this is a short video.

He then spends 2:30 telling you to tap it out with a cleaning rod. That's it. It's a one sentence tip that you just read in maybe half a second. Tap the fucker out with a cleaning rod.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UasowQddLng

Here is another good example. This dude takes 3:30 to explain where to find the Strenght Bobblehead in Fallout 4. It's literally a thing that requires maybe a sentence and a screenshot. Two if you want both an in-game shot of the item and a map. There are other videos out there that show the exact same thing in 15 seconds.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGEQ28akleM

It's this stuff that I'm talking about when I say how pointlessly bloated youtube videos can be. The highly produced "TV" show stuff like Slow Mo Guys falls prey to it too, but that's minor compared to the really loving egregious poo poo you'll find if you just want to know how to properly use a case trimmer or something.

Yeah, that's usually during the repeated narration.

The worst for padding was "Tank Overhaul" where they would have to spend 1/2 the program talking about modern tanks because there was only about 30 seconds of stock footage of the actual tank they were working on moving, and watching a crew spend 30 hours trying to remove a rusted bolt or pin isn't exactly compelling television.
