All I'm saying is you don't start with the shaming or else you've literally given them the "mean bully" out that they will milk for ages. You call them out in public and you give them credible sources and are nice to them and once that doesn't work, sure go the shame route unless what they've said is so universally sexist/racist that you shaming this is perfectly acceptable.

Nothing "works" with a good success rate better than anything else. Cognitive science tells us that the only thing that works is repeatedly telling people they're wrong, but they can only change themselves.

Right now what we have is the Meadows situation where a white man do a hilariously racist thing and then throw a baby tantrum if he receives in the slightest amount of criticism.

I see multiple meltdowns of white guys in lefty/queer Facebook Groups every day because the white cismale part overpowered everything else and they showed their rear end

Maybe there's no hard and fast rule for what you should do and maybe just try your best while acknowledging that other people are trying to grow too so reacting with reflexive anything isn't going to help? Maybe use your best judgement in each case and hope? Maybe some situations call for punches and other call for a quiet conversation? Maybe start with the least drastic and work your way up using your best judgement that acknowledges that there's a difference between a work environment with coworkers, and a bar environment with strangers?

Exactly.

And keep in mind, some of you are conveniently forgetting the white fragility factor, where you take a calm, reasoned and fact based approach, and the moment you start any pushback the person absolutely freaks out, says you're the real bigot, screams that this is what's wrong with society and so much for the tolerant left.

For some people, and this is important, no level of discourse is gentle enough.

He still said something dumb. The Great Depression was still happening. He just said recession instead of depression and rather than correct himself just made up what he said because who’s going to know the difference on Fox News anyway.

I posted the article he’s referring to. It also doesn’t have a great deal of relevance to the green new deal. The only point you might be able to throw on is that FDR let people negotiate 25% higher than market rate salaries, which according to them also led to 25% unemployment. So the $15 minimum wage will likely be compared to that. I don’t know the full extent of the green new deal though and I’m not sure if that’s part of it or not. Won’t stop people from conflating it all together anyway since it’s “one of those socialist policies floating around”

You have gamers who consistently make attack helicopter jokes and won't buy games because their beloved franchise has a woman, poc, or the double whammy woman poc as the lead and people here want to raise their noses up at Boomers and say it's the parents generation that's the issue.

You've got to challenge people on a consistent basis and you've got to shun them and you've got to be the one capable of showcasing your point in a calm manner because it's never about your 1 on 1 confrontation with the person. I'm not an economist. I did not study the economy.

Why do Americans continue to believe that "big company!" and "more money!" means "everybody will benefit!" Like, this is a great example. You take money away from one group (teachers) to ensure that another group will maybe have jobs in a specific community. A big company coming in means an initial flex of construction and contract work; and those people will, in turn, maybe buy some stuff? Long term you'll get some high end retail next to a suddenly wealthy community, plus maybe some coffee-type jobs outside of that.

The creation of a mega corp HQ doesn't actually assure that citizens will get any money. It certainly assures an increase in jobs, but those jobs will probably be at or below the poverty line. When jobs pay a living wage, an increase in jobs will reduce poverty. Otherwise, it doesn't. You just have a lot of people working their rear end off and who can't spend money.
Would it help if I told you that most of American economic policy for the last 40 years is based on a graph a guy named Arthur Laffer sketched on a napkin at a cocktail party?

I would offer that being nice about it, even if the person in question doesn't deserve the accommodation, is likelier to facilitate follow up chances to correct them again (for some people, I'm not talking about devout chuds here) but it's a big ask for POC to take on. I don't blame any POC for not having the desire or inclination to sugar coat it, but I do find it inspiring when that does happen.

IMO there is no group in the world as moral as American POC. Their collective patience, goodness, and capacity for forgiveness is astounding.
