not clear this is a FPS but also not clear that games built on the mechwarrior engine aren’t FPSes, at least spiritually: The original Battlezone remake was loving incredible and I don’t know if any game did as good a job of providing both shootiness and some amount of strategy. Also the insanely OP sniper rifle that could take our pilots in one shot regardless of armor. There is probably a thread to be made just on mechwarrior engine games based on those, battlezone, and Interstate 76.

'82 was alright despite feeling rushed and having less customization, if only because fighting Ronald Reagan in a freaking mech suit was the perfect ending.

The biggest failing of interstate 82: you get out of the car, repeatedly.

I'm really salty about how its immediate sequel managed to screw the pooch so hard. BZ'99 was an amazing game and I'd buy a remaster in a heartbeat. Could you imagine it with modern day multiplayer and campaign?

I liked the aesthetic and setting of the first game more, but 2 had an online community and modding that kept me playing for years. That gameplay formula really grabbed me. Definitely a couple of fps adjacent classics, in my book.

Purely from a standpoint of the mappers & modders that they've collected for this project, I'm really pleased & interested to see what they crank out. No way to know what the project management is going to be like of course.
