Seeing a lot of Canadian race fans angry that their coverage is being shifted to Sportsnet World. I do find this...semi-confusing? I mean the sport during the 80s-2000s had their Canadian races aired on CTV, CBC with their own announcers I would think the factor of having a race in Canada, and two Canadians in the field would be rather significant in at least making sure the "500" and "Toronto Indy" would be on broadcast television.

So Mario's IMS exhibit sounds like it's gonna be pretty sweet: https://www.indycar.com/News/2019/03/03-05-Notebook quote:The featured exhibits of “Mario Andretti: ICON,” are a full representation of the Nazareth, Pennsylvania, resident’s diverse career. A sampling of this can’t-miss exhibit includes:

Oh my god why are they still on GAORA. This gives me hope the contract ends this year and it’ll go to DAZN for 2020, which I already pay for. The “500” being on NHK is good but if it’s live only then...well, that’s a race that starts at like 3 am Japan time.

FuzzySkinner posted:Seeing a lot of Canadian race fans angry that their coverage is being shifted to Sportsnet World. If you already have a TV cable package that includes Sportsnet and SN360, it'll be $20/month for almost all of the races. If you don't, I think it'll be $20/month for Sportsnet World, plus an additional $27/mo for the Now+ thing, which is the streaming service. If you want to watch St Pete TV package or no TVpackage, it's $27/mo right off the bat. We only really have two broadcasters up here, Bell and Rogers. Bell owns TSN, which has no interest in showing anything other than highlight packages, and Rogers is cutting lots of poo poo since they signed the exclusive, very expensive NHL deal a few years ago. Neither of the two broadcasters really want it, so Indycar is in a bit of a bind because they just don't have enough pull to demand anything more reasonable, so it gets relegated to this craptacular setup we have now. This is going to be very, very, very bad for viewership in Canada. You're basically going to have zero casual viewership, and even hardcore people are not going to want to shell out at the minimum $147 on top of your cable/internet bill for the 6 months that the Indycar season lasts if you wanted to do something crazy like watch all of the races.

Blergh, looks like ESPN in Australia aren't showing the races this year. Fox Sports is showing an hour long highlights package of the race the day after it has finished. Kind of a kick in the nuts considering we used to get the races live.

Bentai posted:Indycar has kinda poo poo the bed this year, in regards to tv rights, haven’t they? If you give them the benefit of the doubt, it could be some complex rights being negotiated in a few places, especially now that ESPN is out of the picture (which helped in a lot of markets). If you don’t, then yeah they’re actively making GBS threads the bed, and it won’t get better until next year assuming they learned anything. I just want them to follow IMSA’s route and give a YouTube-based product for any market that doesn’t have a TV deal in place.
