Looking for advice for upgrading my A/V setup so I'm posting here and in the home audio thread. Current setup: Panasonic 4k TV about 2 years old (FirefoxOS), XboneX or laptop/tablet and Chromecast for Plex app, WD MyCloudMirror for Plex server, ancient (probably 10-15 years, we inherited it) Denon receiver and speakers. I'd like to have fewer remotes, apps and AV source button presses to get between Plex and sports or Netflix and whatever. poo poo's too fragmented. Also, I get the Plex server cannot convert video message way too often. Finally, I want to be able to play audio (access to my own collection is a priority) in different rooms of the house without turning the TV on and preferably through the receiver. What can I do? I like the TV just fine but I feel like a new media server needs to happen and I could probably do a lot more with a new receiver. I'll need speakers for the rest of the house. I've got about 2 grand.

So my Nexus Player keeps pissing me off. I'll often switch to watch Netflix or HBO Go or something and my receiver will act like there is no input, this even happened yesterday with Google Player movies when I tried both the Android TV app and[ casting to it from my Pixel 3. It wasn't always like this. I keep hoping Google will release some other hardware, but it seems like they'd rather I buy a Chromecast? Is there any good Android TV box out there? Is Android TV dead as a platform and I'm better off with something like Roku? Things I use my Nexus Player for: YouTube Netflix HBO Go Hulu Twitch TV apps like Comedy Central, FX would be nice to have Amazon Video

The Shield is better than the Nexus in every way and Android TV is still a thing. Or if you don't care about Kodi get a Roku Ultra, they are cheaper and great devices for streaming.

Yeah, about 6 months ago I parted out my homebuilt HTPC and replaced with a Roku Ultra and it's fantastic. I love the Roku remote too. A full HTPC really doesn't make sense these days, especially with how fucky 4k HDR playback is on Windows.

Looks like Roku is getting the new Apple TV streaming service too (as well as the FireTV and some Smart TV models). For whatever it's worth. I don't see a whole lot that is different from what you can do today with an Apple TV other than A) Now available on more than the Apple TV and B) Apple originals i.e. sandbox content that if interesting enough will probably drive as many people to download/torrent it as subscribe to it. In other words, like every other service, just Apple. They won't data-mine you so there's that too.

The only thing I can imagine a HTPC might do that another box wouldn't is play someone's vast collection of DOS and NES emulator games and I don't think there's a bunch of people in TYOOL 2019 who want to play Lord of the Realms or something.

That is not even the case anymore. There are a plethora of good emulators for just about every older platform on Android TV, and many emulator frontends to give you a nice way to launch them. (think Plex, but for games) There are even DOS emulators for Android TV that integrate with some of the emulator frontends (like ARC Browser for example).

As far as I can figure, having an actual PC as a HTPC makes sense in basically three scenarios anymore: 1. You want to play PC games on your TV that are too latency-sensitive for GameStream/Steam Link/whatever. 2. You want to play emulators that are too demanding for set-top box hardware. 3. You have a PC sitting around with nothing better to do, while simultaneously either not valuing your time or just wanting a project to tinker endlessly on. I'm switching my main living room system from a Tinkerboard back to a PC for mostly the first reason with a bit of the third, but I'll be keeping the rest of the house on Pi-likes because they just work. wolrah fucked around with this message at 17:00 on Mar 29, 2019 |

I'm just thinking about how much I ducked around to get my remote to work with Kodi and kinda want to see if I can do similar customization with voice. Using voice to shoot IRA at things sounds like fun! (not $250 fun)

Yesterday Plex on my Shield only had recommended podcasts and web videos on the Home screen. I could still search for the show I wanted but even the settings menu only had the option to display those couple categories on the home screen. Happen to anyone? It's the worst experience now and don't know how to fix it.

Go up to the top of the screen to the right of the home icon where your server name is at and select it. It will take you to the server selection screen. Hit the select button to pick your server again even though it is already highlighted and has a check box and then hit the back button. it will go back to the home screen but this time it will load properly. I get this on both my shield and my old Nexus player from time to time.

At this point I wish they had gone ahead with the planned spinoff or sale of the Harmony division because Logitech doesn't seem to know what the gently caress to do with it. They're like 2 years behind getting this functionality out there and they put out an overpriced, simplified remote that only supports Amazon devices. Unbelievable. I will just get a USB far field mic and hook it up to the Shield so I can finally voice search with my Harmony.

I guess you don't use Google search, Gmail, Chrome, Docs, Drive, etc. All of which, for most people, is likely to be way more of a potential issue than a not-always-on microphone in their home.

I don't actually. My last Google service I switched was to DuckDuckGo about a year ago. Though it's impossible to completely avoid them. That said I find an always on microphone creepier than all of those, whether they swear it only listens when it hears the magic word or not.
