That's probably the strongest slot 3 gun in the mod. There's a couple uniques and a legendary that try but the fire rate and piercing damage push it well over the top. It's no 25 cells to erase room like the old Zeus Cannon but it's a hell of a workhorse.

I had no clue it had piercing. :eyepop: That indeed pushes it over the top.

it sounds petty but i dont really play the renegade or technician in doom rla because i dont like their faces

i tend to play the marine because i like mowing down hordes of guys with a minigun/super machinegun

so far from playing 1.1 with sunlust and jenesis the problem of getting too powerful seems to be balanced out by the new adaptive monster difficulty. it took me forever to figure out how to kill some type of hosed up new archvile. pro-tip: turn off autoaim

edit: has anyone else played this mod? its really good, its like a combo of golden axe and demonsteele https://combine-kegan.itch.io/gmota

I think the slow reveal of Dusk’s enemies works really well in tandem with the nature of the world opening up for the player. The almost silly enemies of the farm changing into what they do as the world cracks open and reveals the nightmare below the surface is paced really well

did the update add any new assemblies?

it didn't add any, but it did change a few assemblies around so they now require different modpacks. Specifically, the Zeus Cannon and Plasma Infusions are no longer stupidly easy to acquire, and the Energysaw is now its own, separate assembly, instead of being a Plasma Infusion like it used to be.

We started work on this way back in 2007 before this new retro-boom came out - to be honest I'm not an artist or even a proper coder so this is basically the only way I could really make something like this. It is kinda dumb to spend over 12 years of my life on this but hey, poo poo happens :v:

It actually wouldn’t shock me if there are custom 3DFX drivers out there that allow the cards to run in Windows 10.

With that said even Voodoo5 series cards are what, 20 years old now? I can’t imagine they are in that great shape even to run a 2019 Quake 1 engine shooter.
I’d be happy to be proven wrong though.

I do miss the 1999 era arguments if voodoo3 or TNT2 was superior. I was in the TNT camp but looking back I wish I had a 3DFX during the “glory” days.

TNT2 :laffo:

Voodoo 3 3000 AGP wiped the floor with it. I played Unreal @ 1600x1200 on my AMD K6-3 450Mhz and 128mb RAM.

I still wish that 3dfx didn't flop with voodoo 4 and 5 and Nvidia didn't buy then.

I am not sure there's much overlap between systems that still had AGP to handle the last generations of Voodoo cards, and systems that have a new enough CPU to run Windows 10. I think there were a few motherboards that supported both Core Duo/Core 2 Duo and still had an AGP slot that could work...

If you're not drowning in explosives, he feels very meh. Rockets are also incredibly hit and miss without the mods that increase their velocity.

edit: basically i feel that the Demolitionist needs an intermediary explosive weapon that's a tier below a rocket launcher.

To take a bit of a left turn from Doom for a second:

I was thinking about FPSes and pseudo FPSes after the battlezone digression (seriously that game fuckin owns) and I realized that while it belongs to the class of awesome games that had shoddy sequels, there is a separate class of awesome FPS games that had no sequel at all. What’s the most glaring example out there for you?

Republic Commando and Outlaws are my obvious candidates; I guess maybe rise of the triad until the abortive remake?

People keep bringing up Republic Commando as an amazing game, but I played through it for the first time a few years ago and didn't find it that great - the squad system was way over-hyped, the level design sucked, and the actual shooting felt pretty bad.

Anyway, my pick is Tron 2.0, which remains the best game Monolith ever made.

I think you gotta look at it through the lens of what action squad shooters were like at the time, which was that they all sucked horrifically. Republic Commando was the first time that I actually felt in control of a useful set of characters that wasn’t Ghost Recon, and even that had such a different feel and mechanism for making the squad aspect work.

I totally forgot about Tron. That game was pretty fabulous.

I totally agree. I just kind of wish that the game went a little more novel/otherworldly with it. I feel like the "Bone Ball"--one of the last enemies to be revealed in the game--is probably the game's most abstract enemy in presentation. Then you've got the Wendigo and Horror enemies that both have fantastic introductions and remain freaky little turds to deal with thereafter...but beyond that, I wish the game played around with the extradimensional aesthetic some more. Also I think the otherworldly levels could have used a good "Shambler"-grade enemy that wasn't the Cowgirl.

I know that the game's supposed to be getting mod tools, so I'm looking forward to weapon model replacements.

One of the big issues with Republic Commando is that bump mapping is broken, or at least was, on modern pcs. So it looks absolutely terrible.

Also really hated the parts where they'd send you in alone against overpowered super battledroids with barely any ammo.

I think the best way to use the Demolitionist is as a room-clearer/CQC specialist- you're immune to radius damage, and you use only 50% as much ammo per shot with BFGs, so you're arguably at your best against large numbers of enemies in tight spaces, or getting right up against bosses and letting loose. Besides that, doing the most with him requires knowing some of the more esoteric assemblies that let you take advantage of Fireangle, like the Mk. 2 Plasma Rifle or Grenade Launcher. He's much more oriented towards slaughtermaps than he is to basic, half-a-dozen-enemies-at-a-time encounters.

I'd actually argue that both the Arsenal and Monsterpack updates seem to have deliberately targeted the Demolitionist with nerfs- between Plascharge Launchers no longer being so easy to assemble and Hellmines doing more than going "beep" and "Kaboom", he's no longer as grossly overpowered as he once was in most situations.

Demolitionist more or a blank slate than the other classes but you really gotta keep in mind that everyone can use every weapon and good weapons are still good without class bonuses (this also applies to aaagh, who has extra armor and fast switching even if you aren't using shotguns all the time). Explosive immunity lets him ignore barrels and makes incoming rockets survivable. About to lose your armor? Dive into a group and watch it die for it's hubris.

Titanfall 2 is what Shogo should have been, basically. Though Shogo was decidedly anime whereas Titanfall isn’t.

And I got fooled by the Voodoo 2 thing :(
I legitimately thought some guy was maintaining a glide wrapper (which, tbh, isn’t that unlikely) and they ported to it. Or it had Win98 comparability. Either way.

Basically, unless the audience doesn't discover until they're watching the movie that the studio dug up the corpse of Patrick Swayze and reanimated him in the surprise role of the Doom Marine/Doomslayer/Doomguy/Flynn Taggart, this is gonna be a hard pass from me, dog.
