Has Yang done anything specifically racist, like those news letters that Ron Paul totally didn’t write pre 2008? Cuz if not, support for him looks to me like the reason Musk fans love Elon so much; they’ll grab onto anyone who seems like a business genius cuz if turns out that all the billionaires are just parasites, they might have to rethink their worship of capitalism. That UBI is a socialist idea doesn’t seem to register with them.

UBI still has two major problems: it still runs into the iron law of wages and UBI recipients without jobs cannot get concessions from the ruling class by organizing as workers.

i believe last century economists talked about a negative income tax and i know some tech millionaires/billionares support UBI, self preservation reasons i assume. yangs version has a big problem most UBI plans don’t, he’s funding it through sales tax instead of taxing the rich. i do wonder if he’ll make the general idea of UBI more popular tho

BrutalistMcDonalds posted:i think a lot of the fascist support for yang is like a spitting image of that nihilist meme from a few years ago: I've been reading two books that got me thinking about this. The first one is The Good Soldier Švejk by Jaroslav Hašek, and the second is Journey to the End of the Night by Céline. The two books are pretty similar in that they both satirize their respective societies during World War I--Hašek is mocking Austria-Hungary, Céline is looking at France. Both authors served in that war too, and were politically active; Hašek was an anarchist, Céline ended up a Nazi collaborator. What strikes me is how different the two books are tonally. Journey to the End of the Night is all nihilistic humor, while Good Soldier Švejk is about reducing those in power to absurd stereotypes while the protagonist dances circles around them. So the impression I get is Céline is crying and yelling "I'm not crying!! I'm actually laughing!! This is all funny to me!! I don't care!! I don't!!" While Hašek actually doesn't care and is gonna make this character stick his finger in cat poo poo because it's funny and silly. So Céline is railing against a world that hurt him and insisting that no, hes fine; Hašek can see how bullshit the world actually is and laughs at it without feeling the need to soothe his feelings with nihilism. Which of course fed into their political views too. Furthermore, could you supersize those French fries please?

Yang makes perfect sense for anyone who wasn't in it exclusively to trigger the libs. Like obviously the trump presidency has been a failure to uplift the white race or whatever, so we can't do that anymore (they'll get swept back in to exclusively grievance politics later). These people are ideologically incapable of recognizing capitalism as the problem, so they can't go left. But Yang offers a bunch of solutions to no-brainer fringe problems and injustices without ever critiquing the core of capitalism, like paying NCAA athletes and mall revitalization, that it could trick you into thinking he might actually have a structural solution.

Yang’s platform is also a grab bag of different policies so that there’s crossover appeal. The racists aren’t paying attention to him supporting HCBUs, pathway to citizenship, getting rid of private prisons, or pardoning all non-violent drug offenders. The libertarians aren’t seeing his Medicare for All plank or that his UBI scheme is supposed to coexist with existing social programs.
